first dentist visit in 15 years...
I've never had any problems with my teeth, but I had to go in for the first part of what I think roughly translates from polish into 'Root Canal'.
I chipped a tooth and exposed the nerve, and drove down to the dentist yesterday, 40km from my house. She drills it, puts some sort of stuff to kill the nerve inside and patches me up, sends me on my way pain free. I leave and start driving home, and my tooth starts hurting worse then anything I have ever felt. It was like having 100 testicles instead of 2, and getting kicked in all of them at once. I had to go get novacaine injected otherwise I would have probably thrown myself off a bridge. I'm scared to eat anything other then yogurt now because I'm worried it will make it hurt again :( Surprisingly though, after 15 years without going to a dentist because I'm scared shitless, I didn't have so much as one cavity or anything else wrong except that chipped tooth. Total cost for this dentist visit was 20PLN, or roughly $8CAD. |
i still can't believe $8 - i think my dentist charges $8 for access to the New Yorker magazine in the waiting room.
how's the pain now? |
I'm 25 and I've never been to the dentist once. My parents never took me and I've never had anything hurting there to make me seek one out on my own.
Famous last words though, I suspect ... |
If a root canal is done properly you wont feel anything in the tooth afterwards, pain or otherwise. I had a root canal done last thursday and the tooth itself doesnt hurt, just the gums around the temporary....
Did the dentist remove the nerve from the tooth? Usually they use a metal file that looks like a few inches of twisted wire, and if you're feeling pain inside a tooth that has been root canaled, it may be a bit of the file left behind, or some nerve that didnt get removed. If thats the case, you need to go back in. Either way, I've never had a root canal that really hurt after a handfull of advil and a nap. I'd go see someone if its still hurting the next day. |

Right now my tooth is fine. I'm a bit scared to eat though. I'm living off yogurt...Although i did eat some chocolate (kinder egg) to test and it seemed to be ok. I figured if eating something is going to put me into some serious pain, it should be delicious :1orglaugh |

keep in mind that our flesh and bones, so to speak, are made to last roughly 30 years. |

Its good when you have some perfect healthy teeth.

wow, at these prices I need to get into the car and drive over to Poland
|
I'm 21 and the dentist has already committed a massacre to my molars.

vodka is the eastern European solution.
|
Dude you should really start going more regularily!
|
19 years old here had my first root canal last year, to be honest it wasn't that bad. The needle that went straight into my nerve hurt a lot but that was only for 5 seconds or so. Everything also happened in just 30-60 minutes.
I'm probably getting my second one next month. Anyway, good luck! |

i've been to the dentist like 20 times at least i my life, ehh |
Wow, $8???? That's insane.
|
dont remind me... have been over a year or two since I last saw him. Thank god I have strong teeth!
|
Yea, the nerves are sensitive there.
|
I so didnt need to hear that! Konr4d your a battler! Ive had impacted wisdom teeth for the past 7 years and i finally have to go to the dentist because of holes on them, my day for removal is the 25th of sept and im not looking forward to it, in fact i fear getting these teeth out more than childbirth. I hope i get knocked out when they do pull them out :-(
|
gah! i think i'm having an anxiety attack just reading your post. i *hate* going to the dentist. i've had a root canal and broken 6 of my teeth down to exposing the nerves. i throw up when i go to the dentist, she loves that. :Oh crap
|
Eastern European dentists have ALWAYS been known to do shoddy work. No wonder it only cost $8. You should have gone over to old West Germany and got some work done. ;)
|
if you never been to the dentist your teeth will rot like hell when youre 40 or something. Here checkups every 6 months are normal, i got yearly ones now since my teeth are so damn strong ;)

In her defense, she said it typically takes 5-10 minutes for the novocaine to work, but it took maybe 15 seconds before i was numb. It probably didn't flow down to that nerve yet. |
Get Well Soon my lil Teddy Bear ;)
|
Ok, dentists huh? I just went to the dentist a couple of weeks ago ( I always go twice a year for checkups ), I need 5 root canal treatments, have to get one tooth pulled and deep cleaning.... So it was las friday they pulled my tooth, monday the cleaning, tuesday two root canals, woooooohooooooo my mouth is like a theme park :( I don´t fear the dentist, but for these root canals, I needed 8 shots, I was kind of nervous so I wouldn´t get numb. Probably you needed more anesthesia. It is hurting a bit now, but it is normal, and with some ibuprofen it is just fine.

Well you guys should go... there's some stuff the dentist cleans when they do a routine clean up, that you can't clean with a toothbrush and floss. It's why it costs you 100$+ for that.
|
i think everyone needs to see the dentist for cleanings and check ups.
other wise what one situation would have been prevented actually got worse becasue we didnt know it existed or else we ignored that slight pain or uncomfortable feeling. |
ouch! i hope you get it all taken care of soon!
|
|
damn, this thread made me think of getting my wisdom teeth pulled, by far the worst thing that's ever happened to me in my life

I hadn't gone for 7 years and last month I went just for a cleaning/check-up.
I was expecting at least one cavity, im 26 now so the period I hadnt gone included when i was in college living at the dorms, lots of drunken nights where i'd pass out without brushing (but always would the next morning). But surprisingly, no problems! |
