Van halen reunion tour

Yep, GFY needed yet another Van halen reunion tour thread.

I was fortunate to see Van Halen at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto for their 1984 tour, their last with Roth.

Since then they've mostly gone to hell in a handcart with the likes of Sammy Hagar and Gary Charone behind the mic.

Van Halen with Roth was played at the parties they called the cops on. Van Halen with Hagar was played at the parties of people who called the cops.

Its been a long 23-year drought.

Roth once said of Hagar - "Every night Sammy will have to sing Jump. I'll never have to sing a Sammy Hagar tune."

If the fall tour doesn't collapse for one reason or another, I plan on taking in at least one show...hopefully, if only for the nostalgic factor. It'll be interesting to see the band harmonics without Michael Anthony, though. Too bad he's not in the lineup.

Hmm... I only ever heard/saw one clip with Gary Charone in it, and it reminded me of the INXS rebirth: new guy trying to sound like the previous singer

I have FLOORS for the concert in Montréal on Nov 10th :winkwink:

spunkmaster 09-12-2007 12:37 AM

Their 3 biggest selling albums were with Sammy Hagar so he didn't suck but he wasn't the real deal as us old timers say :)

escorpio 09-12-2007 06:21 AM

no Mike = bullshit
fuck Eddie

Spunky 09-12-2007 06:25 AM

I liked Sammy back with Montrose..back in the 70's. I think he did a decent job with them but Dave was the main man

Scalini 09-12-2007 08:27 AM

I was going to college in Dallas and saw the final Van Halen performance with DLR on July 3rd, 1984. It was the first time I had seen them and was blown away. (I remember all the news attention was on the Jackson's Victory at Texas Stadium- uhhh, no)

Gonna try and see them in Indy on 10/14 - I do agree that it's not the same without Michael.

Grapesoda 09-12-2007 08:56 AM

when VH was at the top of their game they were the best, unlike thi band :( https://youtube.com/watch?v=jA89Tl8rj...elated&search=

Yep and Dave wishes he had half the voice Sammy has.

Brother Bilo 09-12-2007 03:44 PM

Is this the 1984 tour? You know, the combined age of all the members of the band?

Fap 09-12-2007 04:47 PM

who wants to place bets on how long the tour will last before they cancle

I have been waiting over 20 years for this to happen. I have seen them twice with Spammy, once with Gay Cherone, and now finally, with Dave. It will indeed be sad w/o Mike, but I have to go. I have tickets to the Chicago show inside the ramp, and am going for L.A. and Vegas (if they annouce a date here).

The reason I am going all the way to Chicago from Vegas? I want to make sure I actually see them early in the tour, before they kill each other. :thumbsup

Is it going to be called the "Fag and Alcoholic Tour"

I was second row - center for the show at the Winnipeg Arena on that same tour. It was fan-fucking-tastic.

A virutally unkown act at the time named Bon Jovi warmed up for them.

I loved that quote.

On and off and on and off, the past 5 years alone have been a giant clusterfuck fiasco for these guys. Amazing how 4 guys who made millions back in the day can't get their shit together for a few months a year and keep their fans happy.

Hopefully this time they get it done.

Exactly.

Well, with Yoko Bertinelli out of the way for now, maybe the relationship politics won't play a factor this time around.

We'll keep our fingers X'd.

Bex 09-19-2007 06:59 AM

I really enjoyed VH with Sammy. As a fan of the band, I am VERY disappointed that they cut Michael Anthony out of the equation and put in Wolfgang. And for what? To keep more money in the VH family? Like they needed it. Pretty shitty thing to do imo ... but then even though I love their music I have always recognized that eddie is an idiot.

solomonYBM 09-19-2007 07:02 AM

Is it only going to be roth songs or all songs on tour

tony286 09-19-2007 07:11 AM

on youtube there is a about of minute of one of their rehearsal concerts. It sounds really suckful, my brother told me how much it sucked and he is a Eddie worshiper.Wolfies backing vocals really suck.

I heard Eddie's drug and alcohol fueled behavior was making him rather intolerable to work with - which led to the friction between Anthony and Eddie.

Likewise, love their music and will always be a fan of the band - but the more I hear about Eddie these days, the more of an ass he seems to be. I dunno whether its the drugs...or the ego. I just wish they'd all bury the hatchet, get back together with the entire original lineup...and give the fans who've supported them all these years what they want.

Eddie is pissed off that Mike played some gigs with Sammy after Sammy had left VH due to friction with Eddie. This is Mike's punishment.

I give the tour a three week over/under bet outta the 2 months they are planning on touring so far..

Some inside sources on the tour tell me:
Wolfgang is the key to the whole tour.. Eddie and Dave are still not getting along BUT wolfy likes dave so he is the buffer between his daddy and dave to keep the peace. Wolfy is also the one put in charge of keeping tabs on his dads new found sobriety while they are touring. Seems like alot of pressure for a 16 yr old in addition to getting up on stage for the 1st time to play in arenas.. If you notice the tour dates also have no back to back shows, that was done so that the guys do not have to see each other everyday to help keep the peace.

LOL. So true. As for Van Halen with Gary Charone, well, no one played it at ANY parties.

:1orglaugh

I seriously can't remember the name of even one song they did with him. And that's a good thing.

NETbilling 09-19-2007 10:06 PM

Did you guys see Roth when he did that pitiful bluegrass shit last year? He commented about singing Jump? Check this if you have not seen it: https://youtube.com/watch?v=kX9qcggRo18 - WTF!!! How will he look fronting VH again? He has no balls left...

I loved VH with Roth and with Sammy too but Roth aint got the voice anymore the last few tmes I saw him. (Remember the Internext Hanco Party?). Sammy is still a singing mother fucker... what a voice he has.

I saw them in about '95 with Sammy. Vince Neil opened and did mostly Crue songs. It was a great night. I don't know how it'll be without Michael Anthony, but it would be a shame to miss.

NETbilling 09-19-2007 10:24 PM

It is almost like knives going in my ears with his shitty fake vibrato on his voice...
