Three-day wait proposed for magic mushrooms
 

A NEW proposal from the mayor of Amsterdam is sure to be considered a bummer by certain visitors to the Dutch city: a three-day waiting period to buy hallucinogenic mushrooms.

Mayor Job Cohen wants to require the wait period to allow mushroom buyers to fully understand exactly what it is they are purchasing, ANP news agency reported overnight.

The proposal seeks to prevent impulse purchases and follows several incidents that have occurred in the city involving tourists who have eaten hallucinogenic mushrooms.

In March, a 17-year-old French girl killed herself by jumping from a bridge in the city after having eaten mushrooms.

Under the proposal, potential mushroom buyers would have to show identity papers when visiting one of the "smart shops" where they are sold in the famously tolerant city.

They would then be given a card with the date listed on it, as well as fliers with information on the mushrooms.

Three days later, the mushrooms could be collected.

The mayor detailed the proposal in a letter to Dutch Health Minister Ab Klink, ANP said.

Guess I better be sure to make my stay more than 3 days :)

mushrooms should be taken for spiritual purposes....not "hey im drunk & wanna get fucked up!"

I can understand a wait period for DMT, but shrooms are relatively benign.

What do I know, I only grew them for a few years.

totally, shrooms for me are just something I keep around for bored times when I have nothing to do or there is no good tv...eat some shrooms, trip a little be in bed before 2am

I agree they have amazing spirtual effects if you want them too, but I am like you, when I want to get deep and spiritual I got with dmt, 2ci, hell even salvia if you get a high extract

all though, last week I ate like an ounce of shrooms on my own and I think I touched god at one point, maybe it was my wife's vagina though, I don't know

They should warn you that the taste will make you wanna puke at first (but it's worth it for the trip)...

Shrooms can be enlightening and can be a great tool. Sure there are occasionally people who can't handle themselves even on the lowest doses of anything. Almost always women from my experience, but there have been a few guys that couldn't deal. The same goes for pot. Some people will freak, but they are by far the vast minority.

Salvia, OTOH, can be very very intense and quite unenjoyable to most people. Funny that CTB's country was the first to outlaw it.

the spiritual effect I get from it usually has to do with having sex while on it, haha...sex always takes me to another place

IMHO It's a good initiative, eventhough it does stimulate streetdealers, who will sell you all kind of shit.

Most tourists (sorry guys I'm from here) do not know what they are getting theirselves into. They smoke pot, drink beers and then the eat way too much shrooms to top it off. And then they go clubbing!

I do have to say that education in the smartshops is on a very high level. But tourist tend not to take any of it serious. It's legal, so how heavy can it be?

To many accidents happened in the past. I for one almost got crushed under a naked Italian tourist who thought he could fly, and jumped out of the Victoria Hotel, and landed right in from of me.

Shrooms are a cool psychedelic drug. I took them once with 10 of my best friends. No alcohol, no pot. Good preparations. It was amazing. But at the same time pretty scary since all the other drugs don't make you hallucinate, so you have nothing to refer to. Keep that in mind.

It's a pretty heavy experience, not to be taken lightly.

Interesting move by them, not sure if I agree. Seems like a way to kill off the short-term tourist from coming to the country.

I've only done shrooms once, and it was enjoyable. I did it in a controlled environment with a friend. Just laughed my ass off the whole time at a movie and had some interesting thoughts. I'm open to trying again, and thought of growing, but just seemed like a huge pain in the ass.

Neverd did them, but I applaud to the netherlands. Most other countrys would simply ban the drug.

if you want to take shrooms, always take it with really good friend you know to the deep, cause only good friend can show you the way from bad trip. and, always took the shrooms with respect and always have in head that you took them without restraint so you have to control them, not that they have to control you! and if you are not sure about yourself, write to your hand or somewhere that there is thing as time, time is the only thing you can "touch" and that time will be here forever, doesnt matter what are shrooms telling you at the time ... enjoy your trip! ;) but oops, buying shrooms? hm, thats totally another story ...

I did some shrooms in the dam once !
They didnt have much effect to be honest, must have been a shitty batch, but the funny thing was sitting in a hotel lounge and looking round to see 20 of my friends all sat silently, just staring at me, expecting me to start doing something wierd !
That was allmost a trip in itself LOL

Considering that after the recent string of incidents, there has been considerable political pressure to just ban them outright, I am actually rather pleased with this proposal.

Maybe there should be a waiting period on booze too, since young people who are not familiar with getting drunk might chug too fast and get really sick. Force them to wait 3 days to get a bottle, that will teach them.

I am against drug control because people are dumb. If you go to Amsterdam you should know what you are getting into. If not, you will learn the hard way.

Why do stupid idiots always have to fuck things up for the people who know what they are doing? A couple people hurt themselves and were on shrooms, how many people hurt themselves not on shrooms?? Drunks do more damage than people on shrooms.

They've been around amsterdam a long time. I don't see how a recent anomoly of more incidents changes anything really. :(

I believe that in the past year or so, three tourists have killed themselves while on mushrooms, and one killed his dog.

The problem is that more and more tourists are going to Amsterdam to get completely wasted.

Most of them have no experience with (Dutch) drugs, so they'll start drinking, smoke some weed, drink more, eat some spacecake, drink yet more, and eat mushrooms - all at the same time. Unsurprisingly, many of them end up more wasted than they had intended, or could even have imagined.

Being Dutch myself, I honestly find it somewhat pathetic. Visiting other countries merely to use drugs seems utterly pointless, as well as rather childish.
