22 hours?
It took 22 hours to defrag a 40 gig hd. Can anyone supply a reason why it would take that long?

I am just gonna take a wild shot in the dark at this one .. but I would bet dollars to donuts that you had a process (or processes) running in the background that were writing info to your HD ... if ANYTHING is being written to the hard drive while defragging, the defragger starts at the beginning .... some defrag software (including Microshit) will give up if it restarts 10 times ...
I suggest O & O Software's defrag tool ... it is far better than any other defrag tool I have tried ... and ZD and Download.com both give it 5 STARS !!! First time you run it ... do a full SORT BY ACCESS defrag ... might take you several hours, so do it when you are going to bed ... and then from there on in run it maybe every second week, in STEALTH MODE, which will do a full defrag in the background while you have other processes running ... This software is fukkin S W E E T ! ! ! it's definately http://www.hungrytgp.com/black_recip.gif |
If you are running any antivirus programs..shut those off..

and if you run ZoneAlarm, LOCK your net connection ... you do not want your machine to be doing ANYTHING while you defragment your disk |

Next time I defrag I will use system config to kill everything in the startup list, then use alt/delete to kill the rest, and unplug the cable modem. Without restarting what would be a normal amount of hours to defrag a forty gig hd? |
Couldn't you just sleep for 22 hours while the defrag is running? When you wake up it would be finished.
