In Montreal.. can you get away with not knowing French?

I plan on living there (hopefully) for the next 2 months..
My french is very poor.. will I run into a lot of problems or are most people bilingual?

KrisKross 09-08-2007 01:34 AM

Over half the population of Montreal is bilingual. The only area of concern with being an anglophone in Montreal is that it is difficult to get a job here. But I'm assuming you're self-employed, so you'll be fine.

Just get used to not being able to read advertising ;)

thanks all :)

Heh... yeah, Montreal is about the only city in Quebec that you could live in without knowing french.

Evil-Dan 09-08-2007 05:13 PM

People in Quebec dont speak French.

To know if you speak the local lingo, check this video out

as a tourist, you will have no problem...

If you would decide to live here, it would be appropriate to learn French as if you would live in Italy it would be appropriate to learn Italian...

Jman 09-08-2007 05:20 PM

You won't have any problem at all in Montreal.

I'd imagine you'd get along as well as the people in Los Angeles that don't speak English.

You should not have problems as tourist :thumbsup

XMaster 09-08-2007 06:07 PM

Je pense que ce n'est pas un problème :)

I did it for 3 years, no problems at all. The more east you go, the people seem to speak english tho. Downtown is practically anglophone.

WiredGuy 09-08-2007 06:12 PM

Montreal you'll be fine. The rest of Quebec not so much.

I'm not bilingual and I have no problems at all. The more you are around the language, the more you will pick-up. If you try to speak the language, the Frenchies will appreciate it and help you learn.

I live in Montreal since 1999 and I don't speak a word of french, just started taking lessons from a friend of mine like 3-4 months ago

Angie77 09-09-2007 08:45 AM

You'll be fine.

fuzebox 09-09-2007 10:13 AM

When I was in Montreal this summer I kept trying to use my french (I was fluent at one point before I started learning spanish) and everyone kept replying in English.
