AVN Ads / AdBrite Break up?

I posted a couple months back how Adbrite was selling ads on Torrent sites and the Pirate Bay and that AVN Ads and AdBrite appeared to be the same company. After doing a quick search you can see both companies use the same support number, same site design, same servers, etc.. AVN employees were quick to post that there were just "partners" and they were licensing software or some shit to AdBrite.

Maybe there was more to the story. I just read a blog that claims the two companies are breaking their partnership. Does anyone have any information about this? I posted the article on my site if you want to read it: http://www.viraldiscussion.com/post/...orn-ad-network

I wonder what was the cause for the breakup?

lol, Tes they broke up, but that was last month Will :-D
AVN chris made a post about it, more news will come. Use the search N00b ;-)

The breakup was a nasty one as well. It looks like AVN decided to stick to the clean site, and I applaud that

I occasionally skip days on GFY (gasp). I hadn't heard anything about this from anyone nor saw it posted here. I had no reason to do a search.

So does anyone have any updates ?

Not bent Will. There are some changes going on but they are not for public consumption yet. Rest assured you will be happy with the outcome. Feel free to hit me on ICQ.

Okay, here's what I gather: Adbrite has been desperately trying to get big enough to be worth getting bought out The initial investors (Sequoia Capital) who have put somewhere where 10 million on the table, have been pushing hard to get someone to come in and buy a piece of the pie. However, according to this:

http://valleywag.com/tech/online-adv...orn-294857.php

Lehman Brothers backed out of a deal to make a sizable investment, because Adbrite was too dependant on porn - this despite the contractual arrangement that apparently existed that gave AVN ads the exclusive rights to the adult marketplace. AVN dropped them, they kissed and made up for a few days, and now AVN has pulled the plug firmly - and Kaplan is going to try to come in with black label ads, even though this will likely put him further in the shit with the investors.

Now, having said all that, I wait to see the end results. These sorts of things often lead to "technology sharing" that is done a little more in the background and a little less in the foreground, so I will wait to see if AVN has in fact dumped them.

If AVN has done this, then they get a big thumbs up from me for at least having the balls to dump one of the leeches that was sucking on the porn business.

Now if they would stop taking AFF ads... that would be something.

My understanding was that it was always Adbrite's intention to drop AVN Ads once they started looking to (a) go public or (b) get bought out. It was my understanding that Adbrite was concerned that many fund managers might have policies against investing in adult-related businesses.

god forbid investing in a company that brokers traffic for adult sites, but sites like the pirate bay full of stolen content is ok :upsidedow Not to mention t hat the pirate bay has a lot of porn on it as well. So will Adbrite drop The pirate bay to get rid of porn ?

its fucking amazing that honest law abiding adult sites are lower on the totem poll than sites that exist because of stolen content (adult and mainstream movies, music, etc..)

Does anyone from adbrite post on here ?

RawAlex 09-07-2007 01:46 PM

Again, if you read further down and a little between the lines, it is pretty clear that a significant amount of Adbrite's revenue is coming from adult sites, which was enough to twig the straight investment company to run for the hills. Apparently after auditing, it was realized that it was a damn big part of the business. I am suspecting that the torrent and tube sites represent a majority of the actual ad serving activity for Adbrite at this point. Judging by the lower class ads they seem to carry, I don't think they have the placements or the exposure to get the bigger companies to market with them.

I would suspect if AVN came to the table and said "the tube and torrent stuff is an issue" that Kaplan pretty much had to blow them off because too much of the business is coming from there. In essence, he fucked his own company.

A public update would be much appreciated by your publisher base. If you make radical changes a second time without advance warning, I doubt you'll get a third try from twice-burned publishers.
