Server related issue - Anyone ever encounter this problem before?

So, I wake up this morning and realize my server is running ultra slow. So, I reboot it. Still running slow. So, I email my host and let them know my server is running incredibly slow for some reason.

I get this email back:
Your web server need to be optimized, since you're under self manage plan I'm afraid either you'll be charged for optimization or you've to upgrade your management plan to Fully manage if you want us to optimize it.

Is this normal procedure for a host? Or are they just trying to take advantage of me?

darksoul 09-06-2007 10:19 AM

Well you're on a self-managed server. (Self-managed means you do the stuff)
Why would you expect them to take care of your server for free ?

"optimized"? Do they mean the disk is fragmented or something?

I have fully managed servers, so cant help ya there sorry.

I dont know what they mean, yet. Im trying to get answers from them right now.

I just thought it was weird they told me i need to "optimize" my server. I take care of it myself, but this was a little off to me, or so I thought.

Tom_PM 09-06-2007 10:24 AM

Maybe they are .. Perhaps they could possibly explain to you WTF they mean without billing you for an answer, lol.

darksoul 09-06-2007 10:24 AM

so you think optimizing your web server which is most likely apache
is bullshit ?

No, he means that it was fine yesterday and super slow today.... so something must have changed... which could likely have been the host tampering in order to get him to pay more for them to "fix" what they tampered with.

Tom_PM 09-06-2007 10:29 AM

I cant actually imagine managing my own with all the upgrades and patches and security requirements to stay on top of things.. more power to those who do it!

But since he manages his own server, I assume he at least knows how to
see if someone logged in to it !!

That can be easily caused by a spike in traffic or someone hitting some
of your scripts.

GrouchyAdmin 09-06-2007 10:38 AM

Have you checked for any spikes in traffic, or any other tell-tale signs in your logs like a dead disk on the RAID? If something happens 'overnight', there's obviously an issue, but there's no need to get out the tinfoil hat. Most hosts don't 'have it out for you' if you opt to not use their services; they're too busy dealing with other customers.

E: Oh, hey, Darksoul. 'Sup?

I have managed my own servers ever since servers were invented.

Describe your problem a little bit more. List your server specs.

woj 09-06-2007 10:49 AM

it's probably nothing major, but you probably need to hire some tech to check it out for you...

Nismo 09-06-2007 10:57 AM

It's nothing major - im pretty sure i got it fixed now.

Thanks guys.
