Anyone have an "ultra-portable" notebook?
I'm checking out the Sony's, but curious if anyone has any good or bad experiences with them or other ultra-portable notebooks...
|
I'm interested in this also. I'm thinking about buying one.
|
I have no need for one. But they are quite nice. :)
|
this will be my new toy and the most tricked out one will run me about $400 bucks. End of Sept they should be shipping.

Hubby has a
Sony VAIO 4.5” Widescreen Ultra Mobile PC (VGN-UX380N) It's cool as hell but not for extended use unless you got brilliant eye sight. LOL |
In March I got a Sony Vaio one. Within 3 months it broke....Just flat out died. After fighting with Sony and Best Buy for almost 2 months, I finally got it replaced with another Sony Vaio and I'm posting from it right now.
I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER PIECE OF SHIT SONY COMPUTER. This is a 2k+ machine and although it's ultra portable, lightweight, fast..bla bla bla.....It's still a piece of shit compared to the Toshiba I replaced with it. |

Im sorry I forgot the link. |
Yep, Sony Vaio have many ultraportable expensive models now ...
|
I bought a 12" ultra portable Vaio about 2 years ago. Cost me almost $3000, a little over a year ago the screen on it died. Just went poof and nothing got displayed anymore. i sent it to Authorized Sony service centre in Calgary and was told that the entire screen needs to be changed because it simply went poof entirely. The cost of it is $1700... I paid for that piece of shit almost $3k and after a year of moderate use it dies so bad that it needs additional $1700 to make it work again? WTF???
I fought with SONY for 2 months but they were not able to fix it under warranty, because the computer was already a month past the one year warranty. I was forced to pay $300 estimate fee (because I didn't go ahead with the repair), the phone calls to SONY Canada are useless, you're gonna spend days on hold until you eventually give up, emails to SONY Headquarters to Tokyo returned no results... Do you think I will ever buy or recommend SONY product to anyone??? Before you buy SONY, think twice. I have another Toshiba which has Win 98 on it, it is 8 years old, slow as fuck as per current requirements, but still works. SONY is the worst ever. Period! |
All of my business and personal A/V products are Sony and they have NEVER let me down. But when it comes to computers and car audio, they suck.
|
I have an 11 inch Averatec that I can literally balance on my thumb. It weighs nothing. It's not really for power use by any means, but for emails, word processing, watching DVDs, etc while traveling, it's really nice.

My wife bought this one a little while ago:
http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp...l=Toughbook-W5 It isn't tiny but is very small, fits in her purse. And it has no fan so it runs dead quiet. She hasn't had a problem with it at all. My only complaint was all the garbage Panasonic installs. I had to disable a lot of bloat on it. But yeah, it is a pretty sweet notebook. She loves it. :) Oh, and hers came with XP Pro. It looks like that one now has Vista. |
I am going to get one of those Asus' ones too. It looks awesome for the price.
|
Bummer about the Vaios... The Toshiba Portege line looks pretty slick though. I'll have to check them out at the store.
|
Anyone else?
|
the toughbooks by panasonic are awesome!!
10.4" screen and are so tough you could drive over it.. http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp...Toug hbook-19 |
I have a sony vaio fe series without warranty. I got it 2 months ago from a friend, hope it will not let me down alltrough reading this thread I'm thinking to change it
|
Well i have two vaios and they are like bulletproof. One of them i have is for 16 months and if you see a photo of it it's like went out of box now and I have used it heavily.
I'll order their ultra-portable model too. |
Overall, Sony's suck donkeyballs. The feel of the keyboards and the sound are terrible. You would think of all things the sound on a SONY 15" would at least be as good as on a Compaq 13". But NO! It was a major disappointment. I can only imagine what it's like on the ultra portables.
5 months into my new $2k FE the power input is starting to act funny. The left click is showing extreme signs of wear and the is some kind of memory burp happening every 20 minutes or so. I'm taking it to the Sony Style store on Monday since I bought the max insurance and I'm telling them to fix every little thing on this bitch. For laptops I have owned a Sony, Apple, Toshiba, Compaq & IBM. I would only buy a Compaq, Toshiba and an Apple again. So far, if you can get over the whole no right click thing (which I can't) the Apple Macbooks are probably the best bet. I'm like you and I really wanted to buy an ultra portable next but I think next I'm going to just buy another big 15" and also pick up either an IPhone or a HTC http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.en...er-press-1.jpg The processors on those have come along far enough for me to do basic stuff that I would lug my computer around for anyway. |
You should check out the Lenovo X61s tablet. It may not be an ultraportable but it rocks and weighs 3.8#'s. I would get the multitouch surface display.
