Outspoken comedian Whoopi Goldberg drew a scathing rebuke from animal rights activists on Tuesday for defending U.S. football star Michael Vick's role in dogfighting during her debut on ABC's talk show "The View."
.....
""For a lot of people, dogs are sport," Goldberg said on the show."...

What's wrong with people is they think that just because someone is a movie actor/celebrity they should have a more valuable opinion.

tony286 09-04-2007 10:29 PM

man I lost alot of respect for her.

how did you manage to gather that?
Because she has an opinion you automatically assume she thinks hers is more valuable than others?

Martin3 09-05-2007 04:06 AM

What's the fuss about?
I didn't see the actualy interview to hear what she said in context. But from the article it didn't sound like she was defending him, just stating the possible reason behind his actions. And what she said is true, it's a cultural problem in certain areas.

who 09-05-2007 04:10 AM

What? THIS is her defending him: """For a lot of people, dogs are sport," Goldberg said on the show."..."

How the fuck does that turn her into some kind of monster? She stated a fact... OH NO....

AsianDivaGirlsWebDude 09-05-2007 04:11 AM

Maybe she's into rough sex...(Bark like a dog, bitch!)...

Sadly, I actually saw the show..... and she doesn't think he should be excused, but that people have to realize that he didn't know he was doing anything wrong because dog fighting was just a part of the culture where he grew up.

They also mentioned that in some countries the men can beat their wives, and would do it in the US without thinking because, well, that's their culture. They'd still be arrested for it, but they wouldn't understand why at first.

The same went for his dog fighting.

p1mpdogg 09-05-2007 04:16 AM

why is dog fighting bad but dog racing is good?

at the end of the day in each scenario one is going to be seriously hurt, killed or given away to some animal that treats the animals like dirt anyways

Why 09-05-2007 04:22 AM

i know lots of people that breed and fight dogs. actually many of them are native americans.

in mexico they fight cocks and bulls, same in spain. other countries kill and sacrifice animals publicly, shit an airline in nepal killed two goats just this week, in help thier airline fight off technical problems.

some people still consider animals to be exactly that animals and dont feel they have and rights whatsoever. so killing them for sacrifice or sport is just part of that thought, after all your animals are your possessions and no one can tell you what not to do with your possessions if your not hurting anyone else.

these are not my personal opinions on the matter, simply an outlook.

This should be moved to post spot #2.

Admins.. wanna get on that please. Thanks.

Angie77 09-05-2007 04:25 AM

dogs are sport!?

I lost ALL respect for her.

bobby666 09-05-2007 04:51 AM

it is her problem , not mine

bqlinks 09-05-2007 05:03 AM

Yeah.. that sure isn't cool at all..

RFremont 09-05-2007 05:06 AM

Yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion and here's mine:

Fuck whoopi goldberg.

It wasn't just the 'fighting' but the treatment, torture and killing of the dogs that lost. And 'cultural' problem? What the fuck is that? The laws are pretty clear and well known with respect to treatment of animals, and that's if you're too fucking ignorant or inhumane to realize torturing a dog to death just may be reprehensible. :321GFY

NaughtyRob 09-05-2007 05:54 AM

Anyone that defends him, especially a public celebrity is nuts.

alby_persignup 09-05-2007 06:07 AM

maybe whoopi wants vick to torture her in bed!.. shes nuts!

Tom_PM 09-05-2007 06:18 AM

I caught that part of the show yesterday as well, and StuartD is right. Nobody I know from the south has ever hinted to me that dogfighting is normal or everyday stuff where they live. But Whoopi seemed to feel that where he's from it's not exactly rare.
Still an odd thing to say but drama for their season premiere sorta.

I'm from the South and my cousin has fought dogs for as long as I can remember and been arrested for it several times. Several other people I know have been to dogfights.

I saw the show too and per usual, the media is blowing what she said way out of proportion. She essentially said "this is why Michael Vick probably did it and didn't think it was a big deal, but YES, he should still be punished"

agreed.
SHE offered an explanation, an understanding

Yeah, the media ALWAYS chops off comments at their most controversial point and she was not saying it was OK, or that he was innocent at all or anything like that.

Personally IMHO, it was all for news and subsequent ratings. Rosie taught the View how to generate more income.

candyflip 09-05-2007 07:31 AM

We're now talking about The View on GFY. Job done, nothing more to be said. :winkwink:

You watch the view?

ClimaxXx 09-05-2007 07:46 AM

Too many things at play here... mainly the media blowing a simple statement way out of proportion... Everyone's entitled to his/her opinion... whether it should be made public or not...
In terms of the dog fighting, I don't have my head wrapped around the whole situation so I cannot comment too much... I just believe torture to any kind of animal is inhumane and just an outcry to say "I am man, hear me roar..."

It's true, 100 years ago no one would have batted an eye over dog fighting.

OG LennyT 09-05-2007 08:15 AM

Whoopi had to make a big statement for her debut on the View, it's all about the marketing.

Nope, which is why I said it was sad. It's the ONLY episode I've ever seen, strangely enough.
My wife had it on for some unknown reason and they started talking about the dog fighting, so I listened in.

GAMEFINEST 09-05-2007 08:18 AM

someone had to do it
