will i lose my #1 rank in google?
 

Currently, I have #1 rank in google for "free gallery":
http://www.google.com/search?q=free+gallery

If you check, it might be because of all the "free" and "gallery" text on my site. Check out google's cached page of my site here:
http://216.239.51.100/search?q=cache...hl=en&ie=UTF-8

If you scroll way down to "Free Oliver Klozov Galleries" you will see all the text I am talking about. Notice that the galleries above with "free" and "gallery" in it are NOT highlighted. This is because they are built with javascript.

The problem:

I am converting a lot of my code to javascript, including the "Free Oliver Klozov Galleries" section (already done), and the other galleries below too.

The question:

Will I lose my #1 spot because googlebot can not read my javascript?

I wouldn't have a clue.. but if there is even the slightest risk of losing your #1, i sure as hell wouldn't be changing anything! If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Good point, but I was trying to save bandwidth, increase load speed, and thus increase productivity and bookmarking of my site. It's always a game of give and take when trying to optimize your sites. :(

I agree, but to me, this case is a rather easy one to decide about. Think about what you'd be taking, and what you'd be giving away! Sure, if googlebot can read javascript, awesome, go for it. If not, don't fuck with it!

I guess that's the real question at hand... Does anyone know if the google bot parses javascript or not?

First of all, Congrats on the #1 spot, that's sweet! Secondly, I know that you want to optimise your server, you talked about it in the other thread. But if you look at it this way. Your server is kinda underpowered. Why mess with the code which could take your #1 spot away, when you could go out, buy a new server and be done with it? A new server can be done for relatively cheap, compared to how much $$$ could be lost by losing the #1 spot and ending up on page 3 for example.

With a #1 spot in google i'd advise against doing anything drastic to a site as it could have an effect.

From my understanding, google places emphasis on title tag's, keyword density (keywords/all the text on a page), link density, and site popularity (how many other sites are linked to yours and the popularity of each). It really is a complex system and unfortunately google is almost a dictator when it comes to websites.

Any and all javascript you want to place on a site i'd reccommend you put in external files, as it's very easy for a crawler to choke on these sections.

Like others have said, I wouldn't risk changing a thing. :winkwink:

googlebot does NOT read JavaScript! Shit if you had a #1, dont change any text, link text (between <a></a>) or anything to do with the structure of that site. You are on a winner dont go and fuck it up. :(
