Um.. how fucking good is Californication?

I didn't really want to watch it.. it just sounded a bit lame. But the station segued directly into it from the previous show and from the first scene I was hooked.. breath of fresh air.. laughed my guts out. Hope the second episode is as good as the first. ha.

Good stuff cause i've just finished Deadwood and Sopranos..

DateDoc 08-27-2007 06:17 PM

U must be a week behind as the 3rd episode is tonight. :)

fuzzylogic 08-27-2007 06:19 PM

Following in the footsteps of the successful and highly-acclaimed series Dexter, Weeds and Brotherhood, SHOWTIME has ordered 12 half-hour episodes of a stylish new comedy series, (as yet untitled) scheduled to premiere in August, it was announced today by Robert Greenblatt, Showtime President of Entertainment. Set to begin production in Los Angeles in June the new series stars and is executive produced by Golden Globe®-winning actor David Duchovny (“The X-Files”). Co-starring alongside Duchovny are Natascha McElhone (The Truman Show, Laurel Canyon), Madeleine Martin (“Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “Hope & Faith”), Madeline Zima (“The Nanny,” A Cinderella Story), and Evan Handler (“Sex and the City”).

“This series furthers the SHOWTIME brand of high-quality, sophisticated, premium television and will be perfectly at home in the comedy space we've carved out with ‘Weeds,'" said Greenblatt. “And I'm personally thrilled to be back in business with David Duchovny, with whom I worked on ‘The X Files.’ But anyone expecting Agent Mulder to resurface will be pleasantly surprised to see David create a character who is deeply flawed yet funny, complicated, and utterly human.”

“I am thrilled to be working with Tom Kapinos and Showtime,” Duchovny said. “The last few years, Showtime has been making some of the most interesting and enjoyable television there is, and I can’t wait to continue that tradition.”

Sophisticated and unique, this comedy centers on novelist Hank Moody (Duchovny) who struggles to raise his 13-year-old daughter (Madeleine Martin), while still carrying a torch for his ex-girlfriend Karen (McElhone). His obsession with truth-telling and self-destructive behavior -- drinks, drugs and relationships -- are both destroying and enriching his career.

Duchovny is best known to millions of fans for his work as Agent Fox Mulder on the long-running cult classic television series, “The X Files,” a role for which he earned a Golden Globe® Award and was nominated for an Emmy®. He also received Emmy® nominations for guest appearances on “The Larry Sanders Show” and “Sex and the City.” He is a three-time Golden Globe® and SAG Award nominee. On the big screen, Duchovny’s film credits include last year’s Trust the Man and Evolution, both opposite Julianne Moore; and Return to Me, co-starring Minnie Driver. Upcoming film projects include Jake Kasdan’s The TV Set, and Things We Lost in the Fire opposite Halle Berry and Benicio del Toro.

Heh.. I'm thankful it's only two weeks behind. In Australia we're normally a half to full season behind.. I don't even think Season 3 of Lost is finished here yet.. or Heroes..
Torrents are finally kicking our stations in the ass though and they're starting to screen shows at the same time. They've been ridiculously lazy and they normally fuck up shows by screwing with the scheduling. The Sopranos had about 5 different timeslots on 3 different days over it's run. The Shield got moved to a different day half way through a season and then taken off the air before it finished.. Same with 4400. With some shows they'd not screen the season finale, but instead make the second last show the finale and keep the actual finale for the first ep of the next season to drag you back to it.
Really disgusting behaviour. You couldn't even start watching a series with the knowledge you'd get to see the end of the season even IF you kept track of the schedule changes. They're basically reaping what they've sown.

They tried the simultaneous US/AU releases with Jericho but took it off air before the season ended due to low ratings.

I guess because I had such low expectations for it I was very impressed. I wouldn't compare it to Deadwood or any of the movie quality shows (or even Oz which has quality writing more so than production values) but for a rom-com serial it's certainly pretty good. Even beyond the tits and swearing, he's just a funny character.. then again any show that has the lead beat down someone using their phone in a cinema in the first episode gets thumbs up from me.

Yeah the song isn't bad.. half the reason why I thought the show would probably suck - the unoriginal title.

nekrom 08-27-2007 11:38 PM

Watched it last night as well, was a pisser of a show. I thought it was going to be pants, but I was wrong. Memorable moment would have to be him bonking the chick while she was punching him in the face, totally golden. :)

ultimatebbwdotcom 08-28-2007 12:15 AM

Good show so far - Duchovny actually plays the sarcastic, disillusioned, self destructive, promiscuous dead beat dad pretty well.

heh.. timing.. re what i was saying earlier about AU stations here's a review from tonight's guide :

http://www.yourtv.com.au/reviews/index.cfm?i=123436

The Sopranos

This landmark drama finally returns to our screens, but how long will it be before it's whacked by the Nine Network's ruthless scheduling department?

Having been unceremoniously pulled by the Nine Network so many times, it's unlikely there are many Sopranos fans left who can even recall where things left off. Australian audiences were apparently left hanging after episode 12 of the sixth season.

[snip]
blah blah blah episode description
[/snip]

Nine's lousy treatment of this superior drama has incited much rage and frustration among the viewing public. It seems the free-to-air networks spend money securing broadcast rights to quality shows only to bury them.

Having said its last farewells in the US earlier in 2007, hopefully this landmark drama will be allowed a fitting end on our shores.

The Sopranos returns to the Nine Network: Tuesday, August 28, 10.45pm.

heh.. and thats posted on the Nine MSN network lol.

ADL Colin 08-28-2007 02:32 AM
