Is my hard drive gonna die on me ?
 

Hey guys, I'm just checking to get your opinions. My computer started acting screwy a couple of days ago where I'd be working, then all of a sudden, I couldn't click on anything. I'd reboot over and over, but I still couldn't click on anything. When it's like that, I can use the tab keys to get around into my start menu, but I still can't open up things with it, so I know that it's not my mouse.

What's odd is that it works then I can shut it down and later on, it'll work as if nothing is wrong, kinda like right now, no problems, so I don't know if it's a heat problem. I opened up my system, blew out all of the dust, checked to make sure that the fans were working, and made sure that the vents are ok, but it's still the same thing.

One other strange aspect of the matter is that my hard drive running light has been staying on a lot, like right now, while it's sitting there, the light is on, but I don't hear it running.

I did go through and run my virus scan (which it took forever to do, it ran really slow), but nothing turned up. I also did a system restore to 2 weeks ago, which took about 15 minutes to do, which usually doesn't take long to do, but it's still acting up.

When I boot up windows XP, it loads up perfectly fine, just like normal.

Any ideas ?? I've been getting all of my current shit backed up here, planning for the worst, ha ha ha. Perhaps I'll need to do a full system restore to clear it up OR should I just go out and pick up a new drive.

What antivirus program do you use? If Norton AV, have you updated it lately on the Internet?

Yep, I got Norton AV running and I keep it updated weekly.

I just lost a 60 gigger.. Back up more than your bowels are man.

have you put any new memory in it lately? I just had the same problem. bad memory stick. :2 cents:

1. Backup all the important things.

2. Do a surface scan - full scan.

3. If the hard drive is fine, run adaware and install a firewall.

4. If you don't have spy ware - run another anti virus.

5. If everything checks ok and you still having problems, run a memory test software such as norton diagnostic.

6. Still problems? - disconnect all unnecessary equipment, leave only the mouse, keyboard and the monitor connected and check.

7. If still there is a problem it might be a fan since you have checked it I would still check if the FAN is attached to the CPU because sometimes the fan is working but it got loosen from the CPU which cause overheating etc - do it carefully, if you are not sure, let a technician do that (I would install another case fan).

8. If still you are having problems consider reinstalling windows.

Reinstall the mouse driver.. battery operated? Change them. If its cordless check all the fittings and try it with the RF box in plain site of the mouse.


Just before you go to bed set the AV scan at http://www.symantec.com to run a full scan. It could be something that is spoofing your HD scanners.

Also check the mouse plug to make sure the connections are clean (try another mouse if you have one as well)

We reinstall windows over itself every few months as well to keep that stuff from happening.
