Australian $84 Million Porn Filter Thwarted By 16-Year-Old

Let me preface this story with a disclaimer: The adult industry is against minors watching porn. With that said...

Tom Wood, (who could actually be a porn star with that name), managed to hack the security measure within 30 minutes of it going live, last Tuesday (21/08/07).

Not only did our hormone raging hacker get round the filter, he managed to preserve the status bar, indicating a functional security system. Not only is it possible for him to look at porn, he is able to deceive his parents into thinking he only ever uses the Internet to check New Scientist?the sneaky devil!

The Australian government, understandably embarrassed by the situation, attempted a remedy. A new filter called Intergrad was uploaded to central servers for domestic distribution. A whopping 40 minutes later, Tom rescued puberty-infested individuals across Australia once again.

Senator Coonan, a government official did the best she could to salvage the sorry situation with, "Unfortunately, no single measure can protect children from online harm and ... traditional parenting skills have never been more important." Basically what I interpret that to mean is; "Tom is really getting on our tits; if you don't want your kids looking at porn don't have them in the first place." Link to story

Too bad this kid wasn't 18. Anyone want to guess what sites he surfs for porn?

AINOKEA 08-26-2007 07:53 PM

that kicks ass, good for the wood kid.

Spunky 08-26-2007 07:57 PM

Those damn rascals get into everything..smart kid

tony286 08-26-2007 07:57 PM

Filters are good but at the end of the day. Its parent who should be monitoring what their children do.

BSleazy 08-26-2007 08:00 PM

Hack the planet.

:1orglaugh man I downloaded a shitload of porn during high school, and I only had a 28.8 modem... Had I had broadband when I was 14 I would have been grabbing full porn dvds off torrent networks daily.

I never understood the "keep teenage boys from looking at porn" mentality...

It's another of the many rules & laws men make to keep their wives happy. There isn't a straight boy alive that hasn't started the porn hunt by the age of 12.

Of course :winkwink:

Well over a decade ago there was a kid of 13 who just loved hacking (and was very good at it) and managed to access several "govt facilities". He was eventually caught, but a few years later he was engaged by the FBI.

He now spends his time "playing" with fairly large corp websites, domain registrars and some weird places - but can be very helpful on CP stuff. He is back in his childhood playing mind games all day long with hackers trying to access court records, offender databases, card fraud etc and loving it :winkwink:

calibra 08-26-2007 11:23 PM

Smart kid :thumbsup His parents are really proud of him :)

KrisKross 08-27-2007 07:05 AM

What? $84 million? That's retarded.

who 08-27-2007 07:09 AM

It's so stupid.. If the kid wants to look at porn, why the fuck can't he???

G-Rotica 08-27-2007 07:12 AM

That just proves that nothing can stand between a 16 year old and his porn. 2 :thumbsup to that kid.

Agreed, although for legal reasons, I didn't start until I was much older.
:1orglaugh

fluffygrrl 08-27-2007 09:13 AM

Seriously. He could be a gfy dude of the month if he was of age.

Drake 08-27-2007 09:17 AM

"$84 Million Porn Filter"

Talk about a waste of money

Tom_PM 08-27-2007 09:25 AM

How do you "protect" someone who is hungry from their own refrigerator?

I found my older brothers dirty magazines when I was about 8 years old. Ohhhhhhhhhh watch out. I was a virgin until I was 21 yrs old.

"protecting" children? Prove it.

jacked 08-27-2007 09:28 AM

must make them feel real good to know that they basically wasted $84 million developing these filters. they should get the parents to step up and take some responsibility, if the child is under 18 they should be monitored by the parents regardless. All these parent's toss around the blame it's no one's fault but their own, how hard is it to stand over your child's shoulder while they are on the web. Put the computer in a active area of your house IE ( living room ) so the kids won't be as compelled to try and visit sites of that nature considering their not behind the privacy of a door. If parent's were so concerned they would take actions into their own hands, but since no one wants to take responsibility for their children's actions they'll blame whoever they can but themselves.

Theirs so much more good that could have been done with that money... thats sad.

st0ned 08-27-2007 09:29 AM

That is awesome, What a waste of money though.

ztik 08-27-2007 09:33 AM

Sounds like they got ripped off. 84 mil for a damn porn filter

tranza 08-27-2007 09:39 AM

How did they spend all that money on a filter??

It should be way cheaper, no??

Fletch XXX 08-27-2007 09:46 AM

it shouldnt be about the money. it should be who the hell did they hire for 84 mil to code that?

what an unsuccessful job, they should never get work again.

CheneyRumsfeld 08-27-2007 09:52 AM

so why don't they publish the name of the idiot that paid 84 million for what turns out to be a scam?
and is he still buying?
I got stuff to sell him.

BuggyG 08-27-2007 10:50 AM

hmm.. I think even just a wide cmpaign instruting parents about internet control would not cost $84 million and be more effective

Humpy Leftnut 08-27-2007 11:32 AM

Only a government can find $84m lying around for some software lol..

And yeah, I was *selling* porn at 16!

TheLegacy 08-27-2007 11:37 AM

Although we all agree underaged kids viewing porn is wrong and illegal - allowing the government to solve the problem instead of asking us for help is where everyone went wrong. Government refuses to acknowledge that the adult industry has standards and morals against children viewing or being apart of porn - instead we are grouped into the lowest life possible.

So - good for the kid. Showing that the government and their best teams know shit about the industry as a whole. Maybe someday they will come to us and ask for help and stop this problem.

fatfoo 08-27-2007 11:41 AM

haha, nice one

lol.. no kidding

Aussie-Mark 08-27-2007 11:57 AM

That is a huge waste of money, damm

Rochard 08-27-2007 12:06 PM

You can't stop a horny teenage from looking at porn. Sorry, not gonna happen.

When I was fourteen I was selling Hustlers and Penthouses at my local school. I still graduated from college with honors and it didn't really effect me at all.

Lonely immortal 08-27-2007 12:31 PM

OK so if the first filter cost $84 million how much did the second one cost?

Tom_PM 08-27-2007 12:35 PM

Someday someone will take face recognition and turn it into genital recognition and we'll be looking at yellow smiley faces grinding against each other.
