I finally did it - I switched to Linux

I got so fucking tired of having to reinstall Windows. For me the reinstall process has become too frequent for comfort. Even having a drive image restoring it would still take about 1.5 hours. So I switched to Kubuntu. Today is my first day using it and so far I don't feel that my productivity has dropped. My dual monitors are rocking at full resolution too.

I did manage to get Photoshop, Dreamweaver and QuickBooks running under Wine. PartyPoker wouldn't run so I am using the "Anywhere" Java version.

The snappiness of my system is pretty incredible. I feel like I got myself a new computer.

One happy Linux user.

Congrats, anything is better than Windows.

FredIsMe 08-24-2007 12:57 PM

Congrats, let us know how you like Kubuntu.

So far my only gripe is QuickTime movies not playing inside the browser. I am sure there's a fix, just haven't found it yet.

That was a problem for me too but about 2 year ago I've reinstalled my windows for the last time and from that moment I didn't had problems anymore

There's always a fix...how much patience do you have?

Quicktime will run under Linux if you use Crossover. I have it running under Fedora Core7. Also, this link might help you with other things.

I got a panic attack when I used a mac for the first time. I use linux for my server, but only use shell access. Good luck, linux is great.

When you tire of the ubuntu / KDE bloat, and you will, check out http://www.zenwalk.org

Please do share some details about how you managed this feat. Which versions and what resources did you use to get this done?

I got photoshop running under wine but it was super slow.. no way i could actually work on it, this was a few years ago with slower PC's and maybe a different wine version though.

I followed this tutorial to install Photoshop CS2.

This tutorial for Dreamweaver:

I installed QuickBooks 2004 into Wine without any issues. Supposely 2004 is the only version of QB that will run under Wine. I actually never moved from 2004 so to me nothing has changed. I've already printed checks with it and it works just fine.

I've never actually ran Windows in my life...

Learned how to use GIMP way before I learned Photoshop, I do still run VMware for poker and Statsremote. I don't play much poker anymore and Statsremote should be released in Sun Java soon, so that's exciting.

I've never sucked a dick, and?

Anyone who thinks that GIMP is a true equivalent of Photoshop has never used Photoshop seriously. Every time I use GIMP I feel like I am playing a game of wits against my computer.

I guarantee you'll have just as many problems ... they'll just be different ones.

Jeez... linux vs windows vs OSX... what's the point? Not one single OS can do everything well. Fact.

To be fair you probably haven't used gimp seriously :winkwink: I'm lost every time I open up Photoshop, with the gimp I can do everything with the keyboard pretty much. I also don't work at a photo studio, for the basic image editing and design requirements I have, gimp works beautifully given it's $0 price tag :)

Every single operating system out today really fucking sucks. Some just suck in different and more severe ways than others.
