Wordpress enclosures

Who can explain them? I have one press release that whenever I look at the edit page for it I see tow enclosures in the Custom Fields, but I sure don't see it in the release itself.

What am I missing?

Unfortunately, someone must have used his SEO-fu to obfuscate the Google results. Oh noes! :winkwink:

I read a few Google entries and did not see how it applied to the post in question.

See any enclosures? If I delete the two enclosure tags it removes the post. When I hit publish or save it returns with the tags . . . . but nothing obvious to me as what I have read the enclosures are supposed to be doing.

Really? The second result in google for search wordpress enclosures should get you started on the path to enlightenment.

I'm on the phone with him, and literally said when he wrote it, "baddog isn't going to understand that I'm kidding, so I'll put an upside down smiley face so he knows."

That's HILARIOUS. :1orglaugh

http://photomatt.net/2004/10/25/wordpress-enclosures/ That's my second result . . . yours different? If I follow the link there it tells me (or implies) that the RSS feed should show a video or MP3 file

Well, I look at a site that has the RSS feed and I don't see anything special there either.

Is that because our RSS feeds only provide a snippet of the post?

That was my first result.

Here's the link to my second which is I'm guessing would be your first.

http://ocaoimh.ie/2004/10/11/enclosures-in-wordpress/

Keep in mind enclosures can be dangerous since they access remote files.

PS Hi.

PS Hi.

Yes, it is my first. However, the blog entry with the two "enclosures" is at http://www.pradult.com/2007/08/21/br...u-should-know/

You can see the RSS feed at www.whitecheech.com

I don't see the enclosure doing anything. I am probably glad about that, I just don't "get" why it is deleting the post if I delete the custom field, but throws it back if I save the newly edited post.

and hello

Chio 08-22-2007 08:38 PM

I think wp is putting the whole post as the enclosure information. So deleting that removes the entire post.

I'll do a quick test to see what it's doing and how to remove it.

Chio 08-22-2007 08:54 PM

http://www.bligblog.com/feed/

See the headphone icon with the file test.mp3? That's the enclosure.

Does the post you have include a link to an audio or video file (any media file)? if so delete that link, then delete the enclosure, then save.

That should fix it.

Chio 08-22-2007 09:01 PM

As I suspected the above worked. I deleted the enclosure test post in case you didn't see it yet and were wondering what the hell I was talking about with the "headphone icon".

Sorry, dinner was delivered so I missed it.

They have no links in the post. They have a URL, but did not include the html to actually link it.

Sorry I was on the phone for a bit.

Upon investigating the feed: http://www.pradult.com/feed/

There is an enclosure in that post. You can see it by looking at the feed.

Remove the following block of text or modify it and remove the avi file links.

It's not linked but that doesn't matter as wp will still create an enclosure because the url includes a media file.

That's the problem and the solution.

Okay, got it fixed. I presume I wasn't seeing it because I was looking at the feed on a site instead of via a reader?

and thanks

baddog 08-22-2007 10:55 PM

Now I need to decide if this is a feature we want to leave enabled or not, and if not, how to disable it.

Thanks again.

np. Just so you know I didn't look through a reader, I did it within a browser. At the bottom of the post is where it displays enclosures (if any exist)

I don't think you can disable them without modding wp a little. I would simply disallow links to media files in the press releases that are submitted.

baddog 08-23-2007 01:10 AM

Not sure why I did not see it then . . . oh well.

It doesn't actually display the video if that's where the confusion is. It simply places an icon (for the media type ie headphones for mp3 and a film reel for avi) and the filename links to the file.

In ie the enclosures are listed next to the comment feed link at the very bottom of the post.

ah . . . . thank you
