Are we closer to time travel becoming a reality?

Quote:

A new concept for a time machine could possibly enable distant future generations to travel into the past, research now suggests.

Unlike past ideas for time machines, this new concept does not require exotic, theoretical forms of matter. Still, this new idea requires technology far more advanced than anything existing today, and major questions remain as to whether any time machine would ever prove stable enough to enable actual travel back in time.

Time machine researchers often investigate gravity, which essentially arises when matter bends space and time. Time travel research is based on bending space-time so far that time lines actually turn back on themselves to form a loop, technically known as a "closed time-like curve."

"We know that bending does happen all the time, but we want the bending to be strong enough and to take a special form where the lines of time make closed loops," said theoretical physicist Amos Ori at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa. "We are trying to find out if it is possible to manipulate space-time to develop in such a way."

Many scientists are skeptical as to whether or not time travel is possible. For instance, time machines often are thought to need an exotic form of matter with so-called "negative energy density." Such exotic matter has bizarre properties, including moving in the opposite direction of normal matter when pushed. Such matter could theoretically exist, but if it did, it might be present only in quantities too small for the construction of a time machine.

As a kid, I like many others had always been fascinated with the concept of time travel. I don't seriously believe it's possible, but there's always that proverbial 9-10 year old kid in me that has a slight glimmer of hope....

If they ever invent time travel, then people from the future would've been visiting us since time began.

Scott McD 08-21-2007 08:44 AM

Never gonna happen... :2 cents:

Antonio 08-21-2007 08:46 AM

fly over to Bulgaria, that's like going back 20 years

Phoenix 08-21-2007 08:47 AM

lets hope they dont try this on our planet..and go off to say alpha centauri and fuck up their space time

G-Rotica 08-21-2007 08:50 AM

I time travel every second. Going this way -->.

Vick! 08-21-2007 08:59 AM

Not gonna happen, ever.

riabanana 08-21-2007 09:20 AM

How I wish...

tomeatsdinner 08-21-2007 09:22 AM

Never gonna happen..

Casa Nova 08-21-2007 09:25 AM

I've never understood the fascination with time travel... even if it was possible it would fuck up way to many things.

not in this case, since 'time 0' would not happen until this method of time travel is developed.

Maybe aliens.. 'they grays' aren't aliens.. maybe they're super-advanced humans from the future.. oooohhhhh. Maybe jeebus was an alien who was a human from da future... oohohhhh

Some current research is lending to the belief that one could only travel inside the space of time that the "machine" (whether it be stellar phenomenon or a man-made object) being used to to travel has existed.

To those that are saying "never," I wonder if you truly recognize how long "ever" really is or have even a basic understanding of relativity... science that's less than 100 years old... which is not even an eyeblink in the span of "ever."

I second that. We'd be meeting future people right now if it were to happen.

While you get the gist, that's not necessarily correct.

It'd be during the time-line of the machine's existence, not the method. If you were, in the future, to invent a machine to travel back in time, then yes... you'd only be able to (in line with this line of research) travel, at earliest, back to the date the machine was created... but if you were, in the future, able to develop a method to use a black hole to travel back in time, your earliest limitation would be the beginning of the black hole's existence.

So (again, in line with this line of study) the method can post-date the length of your arm's reach back in time provided you're using a machine that does the same.

Correct. Time travel will never be possible because if it was, we'd already know about it.

xmas13 08-21-2007 12:43 PM

If time travel was possible, it would mean that the future would be written and we would not be the masters of our lives. :2 cents:

Pretty hard to believe unless you are an X-Files tv lunatic :2 cents:

...Or have at least an elementary understanding of relativity and quantuum mechanics. :2 cents:

The ability to shift time in the future might not necessarily have any bearing on this timeline, as any effects from said traveling would possibly/probably exist inside another temporal paradigm.

Clark Miller 08-21-2007 01:01 PM

I'm traveling though time right now... gfy is a fucking "time machine":1orglaugh

Actually, most forms of time travel limit the "visitors" to periods AFTER which the device was created. Those that don't typically send the visitor to a parallel universe which may or may not have an identical time-line. Regardless, the "you" they meet there won't be the "you" of here and now, so "you" here wouldn't know the difference. :2 cents:

I did a semester researching quantum entanglement as it relates to superluminal communication, and got to peek at what some of the graduate students were doing to link it to time travel and quantum teleportation.

what do you think Aliens are ?

edgeprod 08-21-2007 02:31 PM

LOL -- I didn't bother to read further down, as I assume it was just going to be people blindly agreeing with who, without having even a passing guess at the science behind it.

I see you did a great job of making the same points, D. :)

SykkBoy 08-21-2007 02:43 PM

Maybe they've already invented the machine in the future, then someone travelled back in time and killed the guy responsible, so we'll never know until it's time to do it all over again....

And then dang!, he becomes an utopia: a time-traveling man in a world without a time traveling machine.. :)

It's nearly always good to hear a confirming voice, though.

if you're ever in L.A., look me up - we'll spend an evening getting sloshed on fine beer and discussing the implications of dark matter and the unified theory. :thumbsup

or

we are living in a simulation which explains why there are not time travelers

or

time travels are forced out of reality the moment they enter it.

Kiwigirl 08-21-2007 05:09 PM

Oh I wish it were possible. All the things that I would change and ppl I would help.

BVF 08-21-2007 05:28 PM

I've always been interested in time travel also...However, I am more interested in the possibility to reverse the aging process in humans...

That would be much more plausible and could be realized within my lifetime.

Who's this "we" who would benefit from it?

Any real discovery along these lines would but closed out quick by government, or the elitist rich.

.. indeed :)

To the star up in ethereal heights
A path so far to stray,
Thousands of years might have its lights
Been wandering ītil today.

Maybe it perished long ago
Its way down through blue space,
This moment yet you come to know
Its shine upon your face.

The icon, gently soaring high,
Of that star, now long since dead:
Could never spot it while alive,
Now gone - we see it yet.
(Mihai Eminescu - To the star - 1883)
.. uhm, I guess it's sounds better in the original language.. :ugone2far

Let me know if it becomes possible. I'd like to go back in time, maybe to 1992, and register some domain names.
