Paramount and Dreamworks choose HD DVD over Blu Ray

Theres hope for my HD DVD player yet!

They claim lower production costs AND higher quality made them choose HD DVD format over Blu Ray :thumbsup

drjones 08-20-2007 12:57 PM

Will this stupid war never end?

I want to start getting high def media already, and dont wanna buy a dual player that costs 1k.

Lance69 08-20-2007 01:09 PM

Fuckin' Sony and their proprietary formats. I hate them for that, even if they make great stuff. I'm pulling for HD-DVD.

Tom_PM 08-20-2007 01:19 PM

Yeah I agree, although I did own a Beta machine..
HD DVD quality is nice, I'm sure Blu Ray is too but... (i hope blue ray loses)

Paramount just made a STUPID mistake. Blu-ray is winning. This just prolong an unnecesary war. Which blu-ray will still win.

Blu-ray outsell HD-DVD 2-1. I get paramlunt doesn't like moeny. Anyways even with this deal 23 of the top 30 grossing movies of 2007 will be available on Blu-ray. 17 of the top 30 will be available on HD-DVD.

Paramount could have help end this war faster. Now they will be the cause of comsumer confusion and frustration. Especially when their titles like Blades of Glory and Norbit are available on blu-ray.

HD-DVD only movies with this new deal. Current op 20 movies of 2007

Shrek the Third
Transformers
The Bourne Ultimatum
Knocked Up
I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry

Blu-ray only

Spider-Man 3
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
Ratatouille
Wild Hogs
The Simpsons Movie
Live Free or Die Hard
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer
Ghost Rider
Meet the Robinsons

Real fucking good for consumers. Thanks Paramount. I predict people just sticking with DVD even longer now.

Yes I know you ninny. How is Toshiba owning the rights ot HD-DVD any different than Sony owning blu-ray? That's what I'm asking.

Blu-ray won't lose. The PS3 will assure that. If you own a PS3 why would you go out an buy a HD-DVD player?

Probably so you could watch the movies that are HD-DVD, but that's just my guess.

You're not getting my point. if you decide you're going HD and you already have a HD player in you house in the form a PS3 then you're going to go with that. I don't see many people spending $400 on a HD-DVD player to see the few movies that come out on HD-DVD only

Tom_PM 08-20-2007 01:55 PM

Well, my super nintendo wont play anything! hehe, thats my most recent video game system.
But I spent some rewards points on the HD DVD player and some movies to go with my TV. Was a decent deal and looks good. Although my audio needs an upgrade now.. it never ends no matter what dominates.

Not bashing your choice I'm just drawing the most logical conclusion. By the end of the year ther will be 3 million PS3 in North American homes. That's 3 million blu-ray players. That's not even counting stand alone blu-ray players. The total amount of HD-DVD players including the XBOX 360 ad-on will be less than 1 million. This differential will only get bigger. Also Target has said it will only sell blu-ray players.

Also Blockbuster has already stated they will rent blu-ray only.
I rent movies I don't buy them. If I had a HD player it would be the same way. Now if my local video store only has blu-ray for rent which way and I going to go?

Tom_PM 08-20-2007 02:08 PM

Well it's no biggy. When I bought it, it was much more even-steven between the formats, and I'm still happy with it. I like that the player enhances the quality of all of my existing regular DVD's, and I've kind of fallen off the gaming wagon over the years I guess.
I'm opposite, I dont go to the theater, but I buy movies that I want to see rather than rent them, lol. If I get stuck, I'll get the player I need.

Sony has put far more stringent regulations on the use of their format, ie. no porn, manufacturing requirements (making it more expensive), etc.

hope that helps you better understand.

The no porn stuff is from disney. In Japan the porn producerd chose blu-ray. If Sony has a no porn policy how come Jap porn is going to be on blu-ray?

Just to clarify BOTH formats upscale regular DVDs. Both formats use the same blue laser.

My whole point is the last thing we need is another VHS/Betamax war. Paramount isn't helping that. If they had held out within 18 months Universal would have had no choice but to put movies on blu-ray and the war would had been over. Not to mention it's jusb plain dumb to have SOME of your movies on both and some on just HD-DVD. I know Sony movies are blu-ray only. I know Universal movies are HD-DVD only. I know Warner Bros movies are on both. Now with Paramount? Who fucking knows. Fucking retarded.

Thanks, you've been spot on with what I meant.
Again, I'm no expert but I do know you need far more specialized equipment to produce Blu-Ray let alone the licensing costs. It's more expensive to produce for companies.

Actually the HD-DVD group gave paramount $150 MILLION that's why they went exclusive.

Good for you

"Blu-ray only 2007 top movies

candyflip 08-20-2007 03:33 PM

I have both and the majority of my buys have been on HDDVD. If there's a choice between the two, I usually lean towards the HDDVD line as well. The picture quality seems to be a bit better, I like the menu system better and some of the movies play in SD on regular DVD players.

Sure, but that has nothing to do with the point I was making.
I'm just saying Blu-Ray is more expensive to reproduce. Because Sony seems to have a need to do things their own way. A current DVD production house can put out HD-DVD with only minor modifications as opposed to Blu-Ray.

Read the fucking headline, learn something.

4Pics 08-20-2007 03:57 PM

Personally I hate hd-dvds, they are much more temportmental, the scratch easier etc. I've yet to have a blu ray not play, while I've had 2 hd-dvd movies not play.

If I have a choice on a movie, I buy the blu ray.

Well the switch from VHS to DVD was expensive I'm sure but it was done. Cost eventually come down. Blu-ray holds 67% more data. As I said blu-ray is poised to win so why not support the winning format and not drag on a format war? Now if an exclusive blu-ray studio like Fox starts making HD-DVD or WB goes exclusive to HD-DVD then HD-DVD has a chance. Of course SOny could just bribe WB like Toshiba did Parmount. Betwen the PS3, more studio support, Target seling blu-ray players only and Blockbuster only carrying blu-ray movies, it's hard to see how HD-DVD can win. And personally I'd like to see this format war over one way or another.

Young 08-20-2007 04:05 PM

There are only 1.8 million PS3's in North America to date.

So you are expecting the PS3 to move 1.2 million units this December?

If that came with a USB port + could do DivX... they would have a sale.

s9ann0 08-20-2007 04:39 PM

while they sort it out can we download HD torrents?

tony286 08-20-2007 04:41 PM

I think they like this war keeps prices up there. If the war was over hd dvd or blu ray players would be selling for $100 bucks and I would be able to get blu ray or hd dvd writer for a reasonable price.

Rodent 08-20-2007 04:44 PM

Fuck both sides, both are greedy and out to fuck the consumer. We lose either way.

venus 08-20-2007 05:16 PM

Blu-Ray, when used with a TV with 1080p is the best video I have ever seen. I do not know if 1080p is needed for the HD DVD tho, anyone know offhand?
