anyoen ever apply for an ITIN number?
 

If you live outside the usa, and want to open a personal bank account in the united states?

I am looking to obtain such a number so that i can apply for a bank account.

The forms are a bit confusing, i don't have a tax return from the irs, so i don't know how to include that. I'm basically stuck on what boxes i check etc.

All i want is to be able to go into the united states, open a bank account, and go from there.

Does anybody know what is needed besides the stupid shit on the irs's website about what you need, asking for a tax return etc.

My buddy went through the process and he said it was pretty painless... I don't know the details though.

I opened a personal bank account in the usa without an ITIN, but I'm not sure if the rules for Canadians are different because of NAFTA or whatever. I just had to have a usa mailbox and 2 pieces of ID.

yes, NAFTA or the Patriot act changed a lot of things.

Anybody with any other info re: this, before i contact a lawyer and waste $$$ through him.

they say to get an ITIN number, you need to have filed a u.s. tax return.

well how do i do this if i haven't done any business in the usa yet, and i have nothing to file?
