Outlook experts. What does secure password authentication exactly do?

I have SSL activated on the server. So I have checked use SSL in my outlook.

I can also check the option secure password authentication(SPA)

It works WIth this option checked, as well as unchecked. What does this function Exactly do?(webserver/emailserver is NON MS)

And what advice you todo...check or uncheck

SPA doesn't send out password in clear text, that is what it does.
SPA is not recommended to be used without MS Exchange. Link to problem issue with SPA
