Paysite names and effect on sales

I've always considered that the name and domain of a paysite can have an extreme effect on conversions and sales. I notice today that a lot of sponsors have these weird generic names like Absolutely<keyword>.com or Truly<keyword>.com

From looking at it like a surfer this just makes it seem like a generic site as a matter of perception. I'm sure it affects the brandability of the site as well.

It seems as if many sponsors are hellbent on not paying any more than $8 to register a domain. But I question that decision and wonder why they would not shell out a few hundred dollars more for something a little bit better and more brandable. I would think in many cases the benefits would far outweigh the cost. This does not necessarily mean having to buy a name like "Bondage.com", but instead something like "BondageBabes.com" as opposed to something stupid like say, "BestBondage.com" or "GreatBondage.com" See what I am getting at? One is a lot more brandable than the others...

What is your take on this?

I'll go up to $10 for a domain name!

As long as the content is hot it doesn't matter really.

i agree with you - while a name can be brandable it has to be easy to remember and type out.

Name is less than content.

Now see this is where I disagree. Even as an affiliate I notice it. I think it s much like mainstream. Would you be inclined to buy a car from a company who promoted themselves as "Absolutely Cars" or "Totally Cars" ? I probably wouldn't. It is a perception thing. I cannot help but think "these guys sound a little shady - "totally cars" ? WTF?" It is hard to put my finger on exactly but there is a perceptional factor. Generic names for sites seem to make the site feel generic...like just another ho-hum paysite with probably shitty content. You would think that the site name might just be enough to push the surfer over the edge enough to make the purchase. After all, they cannot see all your content until they pay. All they have are things like your tour, presentation, and these sorts of perceptional things such as site name.

I agree with that, but I still feel that name is very important. Mainstream companies will spend millions to come up with a good name. There is a reason for this. But in this industry I notice it is seldom done.

Would you bank at "Totally Bank" ? Probably not baring a very good reason to do so. You'd probably think, "Totally Bank? Who the fuck are these clowns?!". Perception is definitely involved here. :2 cents:

True. But it is still a purchase decision.

amazingpass.com works pretty well for us ;)

But seriously the question is : Would you spend thousands of $ to catch a great name... or to produce a awesome content ?

Shap 08-15-2007 09:49 AM

I think branding is huge and has been a big part of our success. It takes longer to build up but once built up the value is far greater. For example Twistys wouldn't be the same if the name of the site was HotBabes.com or JustBabes.com

the big affiliate programs have so much traffic that they usualy dont need a good domain name to help in sales..

they could do a bondage site on

B111O111N111D111A111G111E.COM

and still make tons of sales...

of course the domain name is important... as you can sell it better and get more SE traffic... but really doesnt matter when you already have tons of good traffic.. you just need new quality content to make sales

:2 cents:
