cheapest route is just to just get a cheap minidv camera. You can get one for around 300.00 with no problem. Probably less. Any deck you get will be more than that.

For instance.

I have a canon similar to that one for doing client captures for non hd stuff.

They make them, they just are way more expensive than a standard minidv camera, and limited to only being used for captures. Hey you never know when you may need to grab a camera or have a backup for non hd stuff. Amateur shoots etc. :winkwink:

I looked into this a while back. They just arent worth it imo.

True thanks!

Sony said $538.00 for any repair to start, LOL

the sony dsr-11 is awesome. sony stopped making it but you can find them on ebay.

this is why you dont want to use your camera as a deck

you can do that and keep buying a new one when it breaks or buy something that is ment to be used as a deck

I dont do a lot with non Hd anymore, so not going to buy a deck for minidv. There really isnt much advantage to having a deck. Id rather buy a new 300.00 camera than an 800.00 deck if it breaks. :winkwink: Quality for captures is the same too from what Ive read. Is there some advantage to a deck?

mikesouth 08-14-2007 03:08 PM

use a cheap DV camera for capture the quality is the same and you can buy 5 cameras for what youd pay for an edit deck that does the same thing

the quality is determined by the camera used to record not the playback

Mike is right. I actually put my dinky Canon to work on sets too. It comes in handy for shooting BTS footage, and for getting different effects than are produced by my expensive cameras (think Blair Witch project).

It also useful when shooting public nudity scenes, since it is a lot less conspicuous than a large camera with a shotgun mic attached.

I'm going to be investing in a few HD cameras soon, and when I do, I plan to also buy a cheaper HD camera as well to use for capturing to my scratch disk - unless of course Stinky wants to buy me one; I'll even quit calling him a liar and a cheat if he does. :winkwink:

Listen to Mike and get the extended warranty,Ive had my cheapo dv capture cam serviced twice and heads replaced once and it hasnt cost me a dime. This is a case because of the heavy use the extended warranty pays for itself.
