does disk defrag actually do anything useful?

its proven that the speed gain is so minimal its a waste of time doing it.

Are you kidding? Yes, defragging is definitely a good idea.

windows is working fine for me, slow but ok

I use O&O Defrag

Raxco Perfect disk is the best, but it's not free. It puts the files you commonly use on the fat part of the disk where they can be read much faster.
