Anyone here play piano?

If you play piano, how did you learn?

Do you play by ear?

What are you playing on?

bobby666 08-11-2007 01:23 PM

learned piano myself at the age of 16
got some lessons at the age of 20

i prefer sheetmusic to my ear, it makes life easier and you don't have to follow the notes always

playing blues and boogie and some rock classics

sweet

yah i can play some by ear, but i really want to take it seriously now. i tried to play guitar and that wasn't something that came natural to me. i think i made xxxjay's ears bleed actually one night at a party in hollywood. :1orglaugh

the piano is a foundation for some of the music i've been making lately, so i really would like some in depth insight from some people who have taught themselves to play by ear.

Does Virtual Piano Count. In my DAW. I sold the other pianos in the house. I never had a very high quality keyboard. . .

KILL_FRENZY 08-11-2007 02:43 PM

I you want to learn to play the piano then pay some teacher to teach you . that's the best way to learn . Good luck :thumbsup

candyflip 08-11-2007 02:58 PM

I do. My mom started me with lessons when I was in Kindergarten.

cashbot 08-11-2007 05:27 PM

Fuck you and the horse you rode in on, asshole

SuzzyQ 08-11-2007 05:28 PM

Both of us have been playing piano since we were 5 or something like that. My BF started playing keyboards when he was 12. He still has a bunch of 70s early 80s keyboards in the cellar and keeps 2 Minimoogs and a Propet T-8 upstairs. I love the Propet because it sounds so fat and warm. Too bad their are only about 1500 of them.

Oh Yea.. Both of us took lessons for about 10 years.

I used to play until 17 or so with private tuition...

nothing left though...now I wish I could sit down at a snazzy grand piano in my living room and impress the ladies:(

Libertine 08-11-2007 05:43 PM

My stepsister is a concert pianist... she spends more than 8 hours a day practicing, 7 days a week.

I'd love to learn how to play, but with someone like that in the family I'd merely make myself look stupid :Oh crap

msan 08-11-2007 06:11 PM

I started learning piano when I was 11. I went to this music school. My first lesson was to learn how to read the musical notes. Then my piano teacher had me close my eyes to make sure I can still play without looking at the keyboards. It was fun though but too bad my parents wants me to concentrate on school full time. I do play by the ear though but I find following the notes less tedious.

yah. i'm not reading sheet music. ever. i refuse to. i got kicked out my high school band 3 times because i wouldnt read it. i could memorize a song with one playing so why read it. the other drummers hated me. i haven't played drums in years. i really how bad i suck now when i tried to play a kit at a friend of mines. if ya don't use it, playing by ear and all can suck if you quit any instrument for awhile.

lol.

I started piano at 10 and church organ at 12. Had lessons and did the grade system.

Favorite piece -Toccata and fugue in D minor (Bach). I can read sheet music but I'm getting a little rusty now apart from whats in my head.

I do the whole 80's synth collecting thing too - some Roland stuff (DX1/5/7/), Juno's etc - an Emu 2.

I stopped it all to spin decks and now i don't do either - just shoot porn....theres more money in it LOL.......no theres not...theres no money in porn.

I just read your other thread and didn't realize you were into spinning tunes. I dj'd for about 7 years, released a few white labels and had a whale in the mid 90's. good fucking times.

For your new endeavors id recommend some lessons - it will speed the whole process up. Obviously not some stick in the mud piano grade teacher - but with someone to who you can say "i know a bit but i want to know how to do this, without all the theory shit".

If you all want to talk music then bring it!
I will just let you know I play piano ok,Violin ok, but my thing is guitar 22 years now and violin is fiddle style.
If I want to lay down a riff I just let it flow from my guitar and bring it into the other instruments.
I just about love everything in music being an open minded musician allows me to flow.

stickyfingerz 08-11-2007 07:38 PM

Piano, Guitar, Fiddle (aka violin) bass, drums, trumpet, trombone. Played a lot of things. I still play piano and guitar a lot. Have played on stage with guitar and piano in front of around 1,000 people. Ive sang backup harmonies in front of 2500. Its why I moved to Nashville, and I still write and have done a few songwriter nights in the last 3 months. My wife was classically trained on piano in Japan from age 4.

The last time they were turned on, they worked... Humm....Their selling for over 2500 on ebay...:thumbsup

I don't play but my daughter does. She plays by ear and is just now learning to read music (a little) she plays on a full size casio keyboard and records what she plays onto CD. Recently she's started trying to compose her own stuff as well as taking some formal lessons three days a week for two hours each. Her first recital/competition is comming up in about a month....BTW she's only 8 years old.

Maker2008 08-12-2007 03:55 AM
