New Site Creating A Myspace-Like Profile of YOU Like It Or Not!
http://www.spock.com/
Have you seen this shit? It's like, a mix between a search engine and myspace. Basically they're using public records databases and spiders to gather information on hundreds of millions of people, then making myspace like profiles about them, I mean YOU. So far they have over 100 million people in their database, and they're adding over 1 million more per day. Apparently you'll be able to "claim" your profile, but the company, and other users, will be able to add information to it that you won't have any way to edit or control. http://blog.wired.com/business/2007/...om-brings.html |

sweet, now i can get spermy's info and parade around as him!
|
thats fucked up.
|
i found myself. it found a picture of me from one site, info about where i grew up from friendster, and tags from apparently here, and a tagline from an old old personal blog.
to claim my profile i had to remember the username and password from when i signed up for friendster (who knows when...way too long ago to remember)...:error i think i'm finally becoming desensitized to seeing the internet pop up with something else about me that i haven't created explicitly myself. it's taking over! :helpme:upsidedow |
I found myself and went to "claim" my profile and saw this:
"Spock found information for this profile while crawling the social networking site MySpace. To claim this profile as yours, follow these steps: 1. Enter your email address and password for MySpace below, so Spock can check that you own the account associated with this profile. 2. Unless you have already verified the email address for this profile, Spock will send a verification message to it. 3. Click on the link in the verification email and then sit back as the information from this profile is automatically merged into yours." Is this some sort of MySpace phishing shit? |
yeah theres quite a few slurping diretory style sites out there now doing exactly that. they are already starting to take serps for keywords that my own myspace profile used to rank for.
fuckers. i sent it to myspace, i don't think they are doing anything wrong though. |

i wouldn't give them my email and password for myspace. and, if you can't edit anything people put on your profiles, omg what a shit storm they are about to start. they might as well call the network soap opera city or drama town. |

Looks like they're going up and down here's details. Below is full comment from the CEO, this part is the most interesting:
since this morning we have been getting a consistent request rate of 300 to 400 page views a second, which translates to nearly 1 billion page views a month. Quote:

Just keep hitting reload the site loads. I've been doing some searches this site is amazingly scary.
I'd have to think that people won't tolerate this and it'll be sued and/or legislated out of existence. Especially once the "social commentary" features of user's profiles get going. |
omg I just searched for "gays" in a particular location and the site came up with a huge list of gay people that live there along with their names / location / age / photos / profiles, etc. etc. etc.
No joke. Not cool at all. This site is going to be soooooooooo misused! |
the site wont open for me .
