How do I check if I'm really on a dedicated server??

I did a traceroute to a site of mine, and this is what I got on the last line:

movie-news.net [209.200.11.246]

And that is NOT a site of mine.

Does that mean that I share that IP? Or am I on a virtual server??

How can I check that???

tranza 08-09-2007 07:20 AM

I know for a fact that I'm paying for a dedicated server:

Original Work order Request:

New Single Dedicated Server

Hardware specs:
Processor: P4 3.0Ghz
RAM: 1GB
Drives: 1 120 GB IDE (RAID: None)

Network specs:
IP Blocks: 1 block(s) of /28 - 11 Usable IPs

someone elses hostname could be in reverse dns, do you have root access to the machine?

KimJI 08-09-2007 07:27 AM

Your site is pink10 right? I think its just a case of badly configured DNS setup

baddog 08-09-2007 07:33 AM

you are not on a virtual

Well, the fact that if I go to http://209.200.11.246 and your site comes up was my first tip.

http://whois.domaintools.com/pink10.com was my other

Just because no other sits are hosted on that IP, it dont mean you are on a dedicated server.

KimJI 08-09-2007 07:45 AM

The only way to tell is by having Root access

tranza 08-09-2007 07:56 AM

I'm pretty sure it was a DNS problem. I just recently moved some of my sites to this new server. The DNS propably hadn't propagated when I did that traceroute.

pussyluver 08-09-2007 09:08 AM

Looks like you're hosting at Webair. If you are paying for a dedicated server, you've got it. Their support team will prolly walk you through root access if you want. Suggest you don't do anything with it though if you had to ask the question.

Given root access, you can really fuck things up. Of course I would be speaking from experience. Plenty of good techs at webair to take care of what ever you need.

True, but at Webair, it is a pretty safe bet.

L0stMind 08-09-2007 09:12 AM

No, it had nothing to do with your namesevers being changed man. It has to do with your host having that domain listed in the reverse for that IP. Pretty simple and easy to overlook I suppose. Shouldn't be performance effecting.

Does it mean anything about your hosting product? No... you could still be on virtual, vps or dedicated...

If you have SSH access you can check...

pussyluver 08-09-2007 09:15 AM

Guess if some company was really sleazy, they could put you on a virtual machine. And with out a bit of knowledge it would look like you were on your own dedicated host.

Would be easier to put on a VPS and get away with it.

Hi,

Chances are that you were assigned ips that were previously reverse dns'd to that hostname, we can set your dns to whatever you'd like. Feel free to contact me or open a support ticket.

sonofsam 08-10-2007 01:56 AM

baddog, why are you in this thread? acting like it's your business since it's a hosting thread... you and your completely shit gotwebhost company :1orglaugh

scouser 08-10-2007 02:08 AM

You shouldn't have to ask. If you're on a ded server, you should know about it!

Doesn't mean anything.. The first site configured for that IP will be the one that shows up.
