In my opinion, the adult internet is no longer ahead of the game
 

It use to be that Adult sites were the inovators of the internet, effectivly using pop up ads, developing sophisticated tracking systems for hits and refferal programs, going away from the typical banner and using other means to advertise

But now, a strange thing is happening... the inovation it seems has stopped, and everyone is just following the path. In my opinion, mainstream internet is now ahead of the adult game. Im not talking about how much money they are making, im talking about inovative ways to get the surfers attention. When was the last time you went to a adult site, and saw a little flash window appear out of nowhere, show some catchy animation with sound, and grab your attention 100%? Well, that is just one method being used by alot of mainstream sites, But I have yet to see a single adult site use this method.

The reason I think is quite obvious. The typical advertising model of the mainstream world no longer worked. No one clicked, or for that matter even looked at banners anymore. So they had to change. On the other hand, the inovators of the adult industry are still making money(granted not as much as before, but they still are) and have not seen the need to continue advancing their methods, or at least not at the pace they were before. Call it a advertising comfort zone, if you will.

The rest of the internet had to adapt to the new, more sophisticated surfer, and adapt they have. The real question is, when are we gonna catch up again? There are ways out there to maximize our profits...Will it take a complete meltdown to force us to do so?

the only thing you've mentioned mainstream is doing more innovative than adult webmasters is the transparent Flash animated ads using DHTML layers.

It's been tried in adult, check out BigPlayers.com's Splash consoles. Others have also offered them.
Link list and TGP owners don't approve sites with them so what's the point?

I personally think they are great on non-adult sites, they do force the surfer to see an ad he can't avoid easily before he views some content.

Well you are right to a serten point. Mainstream are adapting advertising methodes that the adult industry are using. They might be inovative in the mainstream are these days, but the things they are using is not new as mutt posted. The reason it's not used in adult is that it doesnt work. It have been tryed. You say your not thinking about the money making aspect. How can you not? It's the whole idea. The adult methodes work, most off the mainstream campains are outrages compared to adult stuff. I recently worked for a client that did a 5 million ad view with one off europ's largest online ad companys.

The mainstream ad marked has gone waaaaaaaaay down the last years and It will continue this way. The price companys are paying for having their banner show is at 96 level compared to the adult marked. The whole thing is gonna colapse sooner or later just like the 20cent click programs did in the adult marked a while back

No TGP would accept anything new and innovative, it would just be considered annoying and distracting like popups are. God forbid we annoy the horny freeloading surfers! Oh here you are mr. surfer another plate of free porn so u can jack off too!

look at yahoo -- what are they REALLY selling -- sex... LOL... the internet is just like one big orgy...

Look at any "mainstream" site -- they are all selling hidden cameras and secret "listening" devices for perverts to use -- and there's always a hot chick in the ad... or they are selling weight loss programs to the fat ass geeks -- so they can look more sexy... It all comes down to sex man... Sure I have innovations on my sites that these mainstream people never thought of or even needed to think of -- and they probably got innovations that I will never need either... you're trying to break things up into neat little catagories that you can feel comfortable with -- but it just won't happen because that is not reality... reality is a soup of interconnectedness -- like the wind of Wills that perhaps is God.

It doesn't make alot of difference if this business is ahead of the curve, or behind the curve, it will always be number one in sales.

more content only - you don;t need to be a designer any more
just put a banner at the top text at the bottom - so i think owners of TGPs just forget a porpose of their sites - to sell and advertise paysites but don't give away tons of high quality free porn - so it's very fun if i see EVERYTHING is FREEE HERE on our TGP but there you can see some banners that say only 4,95$ TRIAL - hahahah

I don't doubt the fact that the potential for making money is obviously alot more in adult...im merely throwing out there the notion perhaps we could all be making more money, if we used some of the other methods that mainstream is employing, and that perhaps it is time to let inovation take place again. Yes, the old methods are still working well, but is there more to be done?

we run Invue ads (the ones that slide across the screen and hold there) and I must say they are fairly effective. we get a 2% ctr which is damn good by today's standards. Cost has gone way down. you can purchase 10million imprssions for about 10k. To bad they do not offer these ads for adult sites.

I think one of the reasons is that mainstream users are at let's say a news site. They are there for the news, not to buy a compaq server necessarily. When people are at a porn site, they are either A> offended B> looking for porn. Anywhere they click they're gonna get porn, so they care less if they're being sent around.

if the TGP were not giving away so much free porn - beleive me, adult industry would be ROCKING. With all the innovations n'shit
