We are trying to make it charge per item and not the way they set it in default, but it's not working.

For example, the first DVD costs them $3 to ship, each DVD after that is an extra $1.

XCart sucks ass IMHO. Try SunShop. I spent weeks trying to hack XCart to work properly, but it had some larger issues than I wanted to spend the time to fix. SunShop was much better.

I agree with that. I run SunShop on one site, and it is much easier, including the admin.

For free carts, CubeCart and ZendCart are good.

For a custom cart, really different look, with all features, hit me up ... but thisd will be in the lower 4 figures.
