Rackshack - your opinion please
 

I'm thinkin about gettin a box there for just galleries. Serving only gif, jpg and html files. No scripts.

I'm interested in your experiences with them regarding time to fix failed hardware....time for a reboot, etc. The only support I forsee needing is for this - the hardware.

Also, the amount of time the pipe has been down will be useful.

I got a couple. If you know what you are doing with Linux it is just fine. If not you may be in trouble.

I have never requested a reboot...and my connection has not been down in 3 months.

Seem fine so far. They're not the most, erm... helpful in the world should you need advice or software help. However once I unleashed a sysadmin on the boxes it hasn't been needed.

In fact if you prefer to just be left alone with a box and not have somebody looking over your shoulder every 5 minutes they're really very good.

I'll give the same advice I do with billing companies. Get at least two different options. Eggs in one basket kind of thing.

We just added one for free hosting there.. that ensim shit was a lil wacky to get used to.

But now after hiring an "expert" at it.. very nice so far :)

Great. I've seen some posts where they are the absolute worst hosts ever...hardware issues....etc. My needs are simple and it seems their plan would work for that kind of thing.

Last week my rackshack box was hacked. Rackshacks response was to take it off the network without notification. Then they gave me no other option but to do a full restore on the box.
They did not allow me any further access to the box once the hack was detected so I lost emails and datafiles.

Cheap as chips though, Just dont put anything important on it.

Yeah I think the reason why you hear about problems is that they are

1. cheap
2. rely on you to admin your boxes

I had heard the backup thing was important to do there.. but I think that is also cause people are running high volume shit on there so you probably have a lot more stress on the hardware.

Also, check your ram when you order the server.. mine was 256 mb short :)

Juge - I read the first post when it came out, but that 2nd post was very helpful. Seems that 1/2 the people are perfectly satisfied..the rest...well..perfectly disgruntled.
