Websites that actually make the internet worth it (other than porn)

Sometimes with all the work I do I forget that the internet is actually a pretty nifty thing. What are some sites that you think 'do the internet right' outside of the porn world.

I will start by throwing Wikipedia and IMDB into the mix. To me they do what the internet should in bringing people together and sharing information. In particular I am a fan of IMDB. I don't think there has been many days in at least the last five years that I haven't ended up on IMDB at some point in my day.

WiredGuy 08-07-2007 06:37 AM

There are none, the interweb was made for porn.

My in laws refer to the internet as 'google'. So, when they decide to use the internet for something after convincing themselves that they won't be slayed by dragons just for connecting their modem they then declare 'I am going on google' even when they aren't using google as a site in anyway .

I didn't even know PerezHilton existed until a few months ago. I tend to live in a bubble when it comes to gossip stuff.

Kevsh 08-08-2007 04:30 AM

Oh there are plenty...

Research a new product, sites like CNet
Want to buy/sell something locally, sites like Craigslist
Want to buy something well below retail, sites like ebay
Travel sites that let you book everything down to tee times
I met a pretty fantastic woman (or two) online
Do 90% of your banking/paying bills online

and so on and so on, all of the things above I have and still do use
and esp. for traveling, there's so much you can find out before you arrive. So yes, the Internet still has LOTS of uses!

Have you ever tried it or are you just being dumb and assuming there's nothing worth looking at? You'd get it.. if you'd have just taken a minute to think about it first.

In this thread, most of the sites recommended are likely part of the Top 100 of Alexa, including your 2 favorites.

Wikipedia is #9
IMDB is #32
Facebook is #12

Yes, but that is a bit like saying that just because songs are in the top ten they must be good songs. Sure, some good ones make it on the list but if you ask around you find gems that perhaps didn't make the lists.

CarlosTheGaucho 08-08-2007 01:08 PM

Oh Yes, I have been an addict to:

www.allmusic.com - The All Media guys are doing a great job although I personally liked the vintage faster / simplier design more, but the library is really excessive and it makes sense to read even about well known acts as far as you get lots of background info about the particular artist / band that will give you a better feel for their work

www.imdb.com - there are always new or rare or forgotten movies to explore, like to browse by director or actor / writer and then set my own lists what to check out (although many titles are quite hard to get)

Sometimes, I can spend hours reading surfing and reading these sites. I even thought of applying for the non US based writer for Allmusic.

I wish there was a place for music that is as good as IMDB for film. I have used Yahoo's Launch thing from time to time to get info but it is firstly very US based and forgets albums by British artists, for example, that weren't released in the States, etc. It would be neat if you could click on a musicians name and get a listing of the bands they have been in, albums worked on, etc.

I use Wikipedia for this myself. Last.fm is another place I'll go for music information, and get some ideas of related artists that I hadn't heard.

Yeah, I have found myself using Wiki that way at times too. Though, I don't do it for films or tv shows because they always give away the plot. Can't look at IMDB for any reality show that we get in the UK after is has aired in the States either because they always mark who the winner was.

I don't know why but Cragislist seems to have largely passed the UK by. I know they have a London page but I don't know anybody that actually uses it.
