techno is not played anymore, it actually only lived a very short life span. techno is very hard and metallic and almost industrial sounding electronic music.

from wiki

Techno is a form of electronic dance music that became prominent in Detroit, Michigan during the mid-1980s with influences from Chicago house, electro, New Wave, funk and futuristic fiction themes that were prevalent and relative to modern culture during the end of the Cold War in industrial America at that time. Following the initial success of Detroit techno as a musical culture ? at the very least on a regional level ? an expanded and related subset of genres in the 1990s emerged globally.

techno isn't played at all on the west coast anymore. well, unless frankie knuckles comes around, which he occasionally does.

i am not pointing this out to poke at you, i always try to educate people when possible on electronic music. :thumbsup

:)

sake 08-05-2007 06:53 PM

The only thing with Frankie Knuckles is that records, remixes and plays house music. Not techno.

I believe big house dj's originated from Chicago and techno dj's from Detroit.

Hawtin does the business. He's still rocking the techno scene. Got his last album DE9 Transitions ablum, its awesome and on a nice 5.1 system it really shines.

Justice kicks ass. Ever since I heard "D.A.N.C.E." I've built up something of an obsession with those French eletro DJs.

Try some of their other stuff:

yeah house originated in a club in chicago called the warehouse hence the name. frankie knuckles used to play at a club called paradise garage in new york and played a more soulful vocally house that became known as garage.

Garage means something quite different here in the UK...

The evolution of house music in the UK in the mid 1990s led to the term, as previously coined by the Paradise Garage DJs, being applied to a new form of music also known as speed garage. In the late nineties the term UK garage was settled upon by the scene. This style is now frequently combined with other forms of music like hip hop, rap and R&B, all broadly filed under the description urban music. The correct pronunciation of UK garage is IPA: [ˈɡærɪdʒ] (rather than the American pronunciation [ɡɚˈrɑ:ʒ]), as this is the most common pronunciation of the word in the British Isles.

Artists like DJ Luck and MC Neat, Oxide and Neutrino, So Solid Crew , Ms. Dynamite, Lisa Maffia, The Artful Dodger and numerous others have made garage music mainstream in the UK, whilst Dizzee Rascal's and Wiley's arrival raised the profile of grime, an offshoot of garage. However on the East London underground scene garage is distinctly different, it has a much more raw sound, placing a greater emphasis on electronic beats and rhythms.

lol yeah i'm from the uk, and garage was what i said it was in the uk too originally, 1989-1993ish and then they stole the name, but is was different music. with breakbeats and rapping rather than a 4 to the floor beat in the original garage.

Let's be honest here; today's "garage" music is wank, and deserves to be taken to a garage and locked away from the world.

You're nuts. From a production standpoint making these beats is 100x more complex then the shit you're hearing from rappers on MTV.

HouseHead 08-06-2007 04:49 PM

Clark Miller 08-06-2007 07:32 PM

The last set I played was very much influenced by Disco, Acid Techno, Electro, House, EBM, Glitch, Minimal and Psytrance. Even NRG or Freestyle. Techno is not dead. For one thing, it's just a word, and has taken on meanings beyond the original. That's just one thing. The other is that minimal (techno) is almost dead from popularity. This is a stream which (I believe) came from Germany shortly after the Detroit scene, and has thrived underground for years. The advent of computers has made minimal even more chic and appealing. Without the original Detroit vibe + Germany electronic music would not exist as we know it. Minimal today to me seems more like chess. I personally don't like House and Trance cliches as much, but if it's good, it's good! Anyone else think it's all disco anyway?:pimp

duuuuuuuuuuuuude

there is a HUGE techno scene in LA, we used to hit some underground 400-500 person parties...hell, Richard Devine plays out there ALL the time, he is one of the biggest techno producers in the world

techno is still a HUGE scene, but not in the clubs, it is very underground....the largest scenes are in detroit and chicago, and on up through canada...but there is pretty much a techno scene in every major city for sure
