Why you ... Poor White Trash!
I have a confession to make. I'm trying to get the white trash outta me. I still get cravings for hot dogs with beans and Kool-aid every once in a while. Macaroni and Cheese commercials make me salivate. I still laugh at fart jokes on television before I realize what I've done.
It's almost gone now and I can't help I was raised this way. I hate it, goddamnit! How do I finally kill the beast within? |
Colin...
Sorry dude... but you can take the trash out of the trailer, but you can't take the trailer out of the trash.... :winkwink: |

dude, just sit back and enjoy the ride...
I've tried to shed my inner Hee Haw and it just didn't work...I still watch and enjoy pro rasslin', will wear powder blue shorts with a pair of black cowboy boots and a wife beater t-shirt, still own a large stereo system that sits upon a couple crates....I'm even mulling a return to the mullet and eyeing a '76 camaro....... just thank fucking god, I'm only white trash and not a hillbilly, redneck or hick....... |
Read the book "Class" by Paul Fussell. Caveat: ignore the intellectual hipster bullshit and zero in on what "Middle class" sensibilities are.
|
OK,
So who felt guilty when they read the title of this thread? Inner Hee Haw ... nice. |

Goddamn. Nature vs. Nurture. Here we go now. Lots of us pornographers now have nice cars, know what wine to order, and somehow acquired politeness in the presence of the "right" people. Yet, many of us grew up in lower middle class and lower class homes. It's amazing how far poor immigrant familes have come in America. My great grandfather left Italy forAmerica on April 15, 1921 on a ship called the Guglielmo Peirce. Great grandma was also on that ship. He was 34 and she was 36. Both were five foot three inches tall, with dark complexion, and dark hair. They carried with them their infant son, my grandfather, who was just 2 months old. They were poor farmers back home. My great grandfather worked digging the ditches for the NY subway. Poor migrant work. WOP work. Back-breaking work. My grandfather tells me stories of the depression. How he had to work as a young teen to help put enough food on the table every week for them to eat. He was sent to Oregon to work as part of a government program to help families in need. The money he earned was sent straight home to help mom and dad. Great Grandpa Delia moved the family to the US to have a chance in hell at a good life. It took a long time for his vision to take hold. Now, my generation of Delias is very well-educated and certainly understands the concept of "class". It took a while but Great Grandpa knew what he was doing. |
I never said ya didn't have class cuz ya grew up poor, Colin. I just said it's somethin' you're born with.
My dad grew up VERY poor, the president of one the biggest North side gangs in Chicago...& he's ALL class. Money has nothing to do with it. I think it's being educated & a good up-bringing that have a lot to do w/ it. |
I'm gonna go eat a corndog now.
|
You're "born with it" but it's about being "educated" and a "good up-bringing", two things that you acquire?
We must mean the same things but using a different language. Sometimes I can't understand Chicagoan. |
Be sure to relish who you are as you eat that corndog...

"You're not gonna have an ounce of class."
Good thing I was only hoping for a teaspoon! |
"Awesome future you lined up for the gene pool brother. "
I'm sterile. I used to wear tighty-whities. Now, I can be as much of an ass as I want to and not worry about future generations. |

I just meant awesome way to take care of your family and their future bro. I seem to recall you mentioning kids and college sometime. Was only saying its good to see people like you and me, come from nothing, but take care of ours, and in some cases, even take care of ole grandma and grandpa. I try to spoil my mom as often as she spoiled me. I didnt mean anything bad in that line bro, just so you know. Its all respect. |
Fletch,
Yeah, in real-life I have a 10 year-old daughter. Precious thing. :-) Let's hear it for rising up from dirt-poor. It is a long-hard struggle. Lots of bad habits that have to be defeated. Lots of knowledge that some kids are fortunate enough to hear from their parents. Good for them! |
