OKAY *****WARNING**** LETSHUNT IS ON HIS SOAPBOX

I have always been laisse-faire regarding the issue of spam. Afterall, I get scads of junk email the US post office and I generally spend little time tossing it into the trash, without wasting anyinordinate amount of time.

I has always been very easy for me to delete unwanted spam without looking at it and not really worrying about it.

But lately a new version of spam has begun to emerging that is most disturbing. Penis enlargement pills, rape depiction sites, ads with extremely pornographic ads luring you to join...etc. Now this doesn't bother me too much, but my kids are starting to get these emails and it takes a good deal of effort to block them.

for example...I set rules in my email to block most known phrases that might show inappropriate material. But now the spammers are altering the text...such as"

instead of sex: they write s_ex, _sex, se_x, and so for for every imaginable phrase that you can imagine. This advertising can only be directed at fooling the individuals that we, as parents, are trying to shelter out kids from. Believe me, I am not interested blocking that type of email from my box, only my childrens email boxes.

THE OBVIOUS IMPLICATION IS THAT THESE FOLKS ARE INTENTIONALLY TARGETING THE TEEN MARKET WITH THIER PORN OFFERS. ADDITIONALLY, IT IS SELDOM IF EVER THE TRADITIONAL PORN SITES THAT I PROMOTE....IT IS USUALLY SOME FREAK SHOW FEATURING BEASTIALITY, RAPE, FARM ANIMALS, CP...YOU NAME IT.

My point is, spam has graduated from a mere anoyance to something that threatens the existence of law abiding webmasters. Lets face it, George W.'s daughter is going to get one of these emails and shit is going to hit the fan...and with good reason. This bullshit email has no place in out business and we, as an industry, have to stamp it out before it stamps us out. The public is all to eager to lump all adult webmasters into one basket and it wouldn't take too much public outrage for old John Ashhahahahaha to turn up the heat on us...whether we have done any of this despicable emailing outselves.

I am currently glanceing at a series of penis pics that depict the incredible size increase this fella has enjoyed over the last six months. I am truly happy for him, and I am sure his girlfriend can't wipe the smile off her face. However, I don't really need the graphic details of his swollen member for god and everyone to see to believe him. I shudder having to explain why some people do this sort of thing to themselves to my teenage daughters, whose main inerests are currently soccer and softball, not big cocks.

Does anyone agree with me? I see this advertising as one of the most direct threats to our way of life and the end result could be quite disasterous unless we learn to regulate ourselves before someone does it for us....

agreed..I have family that just completly stopped using email, a few emails every month telling you EXACTLY what it is didnt really bother me too much but a lot of CP shit is floating around now...that means all of it needs to come to an end...FTC has started to crack down harder on people they catch

I understand your frustrations but honestly, don't you think if your children want to see porn they'll find a way to see it? I get annoyed at TV stations who change sware words into something else (which usually is quite bad) because I know for a fact that children will hear alot worse at school.. The same applies for porn.

I'm not saying censorship is bad, but sometimes it goes too far in my opinion.

If they want to see it I'm sure they will find a way. I think the point is that they should be able to open their mailbox without being exposed unwillingly to it. I've never been one to bitch about spam either but some of the html e-mails are too graphic. At least with text e-mail spam you don't have kids being directly exposed to graphic pics.

I totally agree with the fact that you can, with some extreme measures rid yourself from the spam. I wrote a little Liniux program that does the trick well.

But what I find most disconcerting is that adult webmasters have found it necessary to intrude on individuals who have stared a clear preference that they don't want the spam, whatever their reasons may be.

I guess, why are we infringing on these peoples rights to be free from what they consider "objectional spam" by going out of our way to make sure they recieve it , whether they like it or not.

I am a runner (not a very good one), but I compete in various 10k races to keep myself in shape and enjoy the outdoors. The last thing that I want at the end of a race is a hot cup of cofeee. Bit essentially that is what is being served up with these spammers....If someone has stated (through filtering software) that they aren't interested in recieved pornographic spam, or dick enlargement ads, or cp or anything else. What the fuck are we doing trying to defeat the user controls and sneaking porno oriented spam in thier mailboxes. I can almost guarantee that this will bite us in the ass in the long run.

Of COURSE kids will find porn on the net if they get inspired to do so - or they'll grab the magazines hidden between the box springs and the mattress:D. I don't think what letshunt was saying had anything to do with that. I disagree with your point, I don't put spam blockers on my email. I put them on my kids so that they don't get exposed to the messages that are being sent. I think that holds true for most webmasters. I seen enough T and A that I am almost immune to it. It simply doesn't bother me.

Most spam blockers (according to Neilson rating services, April, 2002) are in place by parents trying to establish some sort of parental controls on what minors are exposed to. The exception would be corporate entities that use spam blockers to keep these ads out of the workplace.

I can only conclude that these fellas who are employing "tricks" to defeat the spam blocking software by altering the text can only be targeting a market that we are trying to protect. What other conclusion could you reach?

If someone is trying to target a market that many are trying to shelter with deceptive marketing techniques, they obviously see some potential to penetrate that market (no pun intended).

I guess my point is to force these guys into advertising their respective sites ina conventional manner and leave spam blocked email alone...they obviously are not wanted. Let's leave the people who don't want pornographic spam alone, they have clearly indicated they don't want to recieve it by the filters they have set up. Decieving spam only seeks to defeat the safeguards parents have set up to protect their kids...I don't know what more I can say.

I agree with letshunt 110%. My pre-teen kid gets a TON of porn spam, but is smart (and disgusted) enough to delete it all without opening any of it. If it doesn't come from a recognized sender, it goes straight into the trash.

What I think is interesting is that I have family that never surfs for porn and gets tons of it. I have been all over the place, and get very little.
Makes no sense.

I find it rather ironic that I produce porn myself, and then get spam in my email box telling me about some porno site. I have email addresses that very few people have, and aren't listed on any websites. Yet I get tons of spam at these addresses every day - And some nasty shit!

I've noticed an increase myself. I'm getting more and more. It used to be a few a day, now it's over fifty a day. What's going to happen in a few years? It will impossible to open up your email box because it will be full of shit.

And it's not just porn. I don't own a dog, yet somehow I'm on an "opt in" email list with people trying to sell me dog food. I didn't sign up for your doggie list; I DON'T OWN A FUCKING DOG.

My favorite is when the make up an email address and send it to my domain. The email address does't exist, so why send email to it?

Between everyone in the world owning a TGP and spammers galore it's gonna kill both aspects of promotion - everyone is doing it and it's not gonna stop.

You guys can debate the ethics of spamming and not spamming all day long. The only way to solve the problem is...

B) Use the delete key on the spam the filter misses.

When you're calculating the time wasted by looking and dealing with spam, be sure to add in the time you guys complain about it on message boards!

That is a great program - and it makes you feel good hitting the block button - as it actually does something to contribute to its elimination.

You are right, spending an inordinate amount of time bitching about spam isn't going to change anything.

That was never my point, tho, my point centers around the fact the detrimental effect that porn oriented spam is eventually going to have on our industry.

You average joe blow doesn't know anything about filters or anything else like that and he will continue to recieve these messages until he has had enough of it and then will forward him to his local congressman. I can just see the field day that Jesse Helms would have with an issue like this....who knows where our industry could end up.

The problem is, it is only a small part of our industry that participates in this unsavory practice, but I fear the entire industry will bear the brunt of the public backlash.

I could care less about spam, in general. I think most people who bitch about it are just overreacting to a minor inconvenience...however, pornographic spam is an entirely different beast and one that will require some sort of action by our government to stop it. At that time, consider what other legal action they may through in to further limit our industry...to me, it's like throwing gas on the fire. At this point in time, under an attorney general who is looking for reasons to persecute this industry for any infraction, we are simply shootoing red flares up saying "shoot me".

Spam law is in process of being written, voted on, and almost passed (in Ohio), in some states and I imagine other countries as well. That will cut down on alot of this garbage. When a spammer gets his butt in court and has to pay the legal costs for being sued as well as hefty fines, then hopefully the wannabe spammers will notice.

The last they mentioned on the news locally, they are looking at adding a clause to haul the spammed site owners in as well.

We bet they will target adult spam first and really smack some people with huge costs and fines. 'til then. forward adult spam to the sponsors and get the jerks termed.

To make matters even worse, I recently got spammed by a company that claims to protect you from spam! :1orglaugh

Some spammer is using a namebot to send to various addresses at one of my domains, like '[email protected]' ... just random addresses, but all the same exact spam, one right after the other, sometimes 30 - 50 at a time in a row, everyday. Im getting spam bombed. Its been happening for the past week. Fucking faggot.

The bad thing is this guy is forging headers like crazy, or doing something really tricky, because the headers for each email are different nearly every email. Its getting annoying. I swear, people like that, if I found out who it was and they were local, would get a serious fuckin beating with a bat to their head.

If you think of it, it's the best spam. If the title is worded right, it could actualyl have an effect.

It's sad to say, but spam is a marketing tool. It happens in snailmail, and it happens in email.

I do agree with Letshunt that the ways they get around it is devious and really retarded. But those are idiot marketers that have no concept of target marketing. They don't understand the principle of sending your stuff to a market that can be receptive to it. It's like a door-to-door salesman breaking into your home to sell you a vacuum cleaner. Not going to make the sale!
