how really good is sumbitting free sites to directories etc?
Say you take a new site and sumbit it to 30 free site sumbissions out there, does it really do any good, or is it bad because of the sudden link growth from the powerful pr's. can it in a way damage a site. Now look at this and do it with a 2 year old site, would that damage and would it further help it
are the pr's that powerful of the link list sites that they can sandbox u. and the sites sumbit sites themselves look compleltly like links lists and what not. Im not talking about 1 site to one list, im saying one site sumbitted like to 30+ or so. If it works so well how come everyone doesnt do it? Just how good are those link sumbission websites for free sites blogs etc? I dont really know what I am getting at because im a little bit stoned, but I hope someone can shed some light! :) |
I say no.

directories are pretty worthless. Yes, when you visit their index page some of them have high pr. BUT - at directories youre being listed in category and subcategory pages that often dont have any pr. In return they ask for a link back on YOUR index page. Fair, huh? Just do normal hard link trades with other real sites, they're way more worth your link spots on your index page.

any more people have opinions.? |
If your question is about hurting your site, then no .. it will not hurt. Also, nico-t's post is sheer lack of knowledge of how PR works and how search engines, especially Google, values the backlinks.
Don't take that seriously. |
somehow they send some traffic...

I found its really not worth the time like it was a few years ago.

its common sense that a linback on an index page of a site is way more worth than a linkback buried on a subpage of a site. Lets say you have one empty linkspot left on your site and you have the choice between a linkback on a pr4 index page or a linkback on a pr4 site, but on a subpage of that site. Which would you choose? |

Also, you are simply looking at toolbar for PR .. do you know internal PR is updated regularly but exported to toolbar every 3-4 months? So, an internal page on a PR5 site must have some internal PR, which does count in algorithm just not visible at toolbar, and you might be able to see that after next PR export. Also, main thing is .. domain value does count. If my directory have 25,000 backlinks it means 25 thousands pages vote for my domain .. and it raises value (TrustRank?) of my domain in search engine eyes .. and any link from my internal page will be way stronger than link from your new site's index page .. with say 1000 backlinks, being a new site. |
I think I am growing old, i forgot another factor.
Homepage of most blogs/porn sites is filled with outgoing links, normally you can see 50+ links on an avg page. While max outbound links I have seen on a directory's internal page are 20, and most directories allocate a separate "Details" or "More Info" page where only your site's link is placed. All of the PR (internal or visible) is passed to your site only. Also, Would you prefer a relevant link from internal page of, say, wikipedia with PR0 or a link from any other homepage with PR3? If you choose wikipedia, you sure know the domain value thing :winkwink: |
Great answers, thanks alot for both your help

I'm submitting free sites again for the first time in several years. There is still traffic to be had but it is distributed over a larger number of LLs rather than being concentrated in a few main powerhouse LLs. The traffic quality seems to be a lot worse (I guess because a lot of LLs trade with TGPs) but there is more of it. LLs also don't seem to be the SE powerhouses they used to be (with rare exceptions), I suspect from reciprocal linking penalties and also because they frequently link to low quality content (ie. exact mirrors of free sites, dupe content penalties). I'm going to keep at it because I feel that once you get enough sites out there (a LOT) then it's still possible to get that stable base traffic that lasts and provides solid long term income. Certainly not a get rich quick scheme.
