Video editors....

Hit me up. I'm learning more about different compression ratios which is to say I'm just getting more confused.

So far WMV has been the easiest format for me to render. However, our webmasters can't recut our videos (if they want) so I now need to render in 3 different (maybe 4) formats.

Real Media - for the members
WMV - for the members
AVI - for the members
and
MPG for our webmasters.

WMV is easy for me to use. I adjust some settings and render it out. If it's ugly I change the setting to a better quality setting.

For MPG, AVI, an MOV... I can't seem to do anything to the settings to compress it at all.

Can anyone offer a little guidance?

my ICQ is 114683191

Thanks...

there's way too much ground to cover here so i'll send you someplace where you can get some good info

i'm having a bastard of a time myself using Windows Media Encoder on a Pentium 2 GHZ machine and NOBODY can help me.

what do you mean webmasters can't cut your WMV files?

Hmmmmmm...... i think there are utilities to cut WMV files, not sure though.

AVI and MPEG? Seems like overkill to me. Pick one or the other.

Same thing with Real Video and Windows Media......... pick one or the other. I'd go with Windows Media.

I'd personally drop AVI and give MPEG to your members, compressing it down to a reasonable level, of course. The more formats you use, the more confusion and support issues, so I'd use MPEG, WMV and perhaps Quicktime, just to please the Mac users. :winkwink:

Have you tried using Adobe Premiere with MegaPEG? That gives you a lot of compression options.

I'd recommend going with the Pinnacle Systems products. I've been using them for a couple years now and they seem to give every possible options on earth for file compression (even with their lower-end product StudioDV).

What I found lately to be a good compromise between movie quality and file size, is to compress evertyhing in WMV format. Honestly dood, that is the future right there.

Shoot at 30 frames per second, then compress using WMV at 15 frames per second. You'll be fuckin amazed on the quality of the vids and how hella small your movie files get. my 2 cents...

Hit me up on ICQ # 125084296

I have been working with web video for over 2 1/2 years. It is still where I make the bulk of my monthly income, from encoding video for others...

And all types of video output as well. I would be happy to discuss the pros and cons of it with you....

Mr Cheeks 09-05-2002 02:23 PM

btw, shooting at 30 frames per sec is the same as shooting in true progressive scan mode. that option is available on most prosumer cams like the sony vx2000 and up, and the canon GL1 and up.
also, when you shoot on true pogressive scan, you'll able to grab better still from it to build your picture galleries. grabbing stills from you regular mode (or deinterlaced) only generates nasty jaggies on the grabbed stills.

Been using Studio DV from Pinnacle for little while now, and have to say that it runs well enough and is simple enough that even a uncoordinated schmuck like me can turn out a decent product.

ASFTools is free and chops up WMV files quite nicely.

The problem with streaming formats is that it can be difficult to jump forward through the movie when you have it on your hard drive, which is why I think it's a good idea to offer an MPEG download as an alternative. :2 cents:

I'm using Vegas Video 3.0

It's a great program, and just now I've been tweaking the settings. We're finding that it's more in depth than I first thought.

So far I'm getting the Mpegs down to 6 megs per minute. And the quality is great.

Mr. Anderson helped us get on the right track. With his settings I was able to tweak a little more for our needs. I'll be making more videos for the CollegeFuckFest users soon. :)
