Eudora users: weird problem

So I was doing a search for some emails earlier, emails I knew I had sent (so was searching Out box) and none of them were showing up.

I just happened to be doing a sort of my out box and when I sorted by date I saw that there is a gap from May 6 until last night at 11:45 PM

2 1/2 months of outbound emails just disappeared from my logs.

You ever experience anything like that? If so, were you able to recover them?

i haven't hear or seen the word "eudora" in five years.

thought everyone switched to microsoft!

I have been using Eudora since 96 or 97 and would never consider using Outlook.

ravo 07-27-2007 06:59 AM

Wow, I thought I was the only one still using Eudora!

I've never expereinced that problem, but I did accidently change the date on my PC which changed the date on all outgoing emails, which made it appear as if I had no 'out' emails for a few days. Maybe that's what happened to you? (just a guess).

What version of Eudora are you using? Earlier versions had a limitation on the number of messages you?re able to store in any of the boxes. When the limit was reached, around 32K, you would get messages like the box needs to be re-indexed or you would find duplicate or missing messages. I haven?t seen that problem in the latest version (7.x).

Here's a bump for you man, good luck getting your e-mails back..

It is 7.0, and since I only got this laptop less than a year ago, there are only 4,200 outgoing mails on it now.

I suspect I lost 500 or so.

Well, that would be a pretty good reason except if that was the issue the emails I did a search for would have shown up, just with a different date.

I just finally switched from Eudora to Thunderbird after using Eudora for the last ten years. I really wish I hadn't. Thunderbird is a piece of shit, and sadly, that is what Eudora will be based on in the future.

Hell no!! Maybe to Thunderbird, but anyone who ever used Eudora should never switch to M$ crap.

Sorry baddog, don't know what would cause that except for a corrupted mailbox file. Happens sometimes. It tries to do a self repair on it and just scraps anything it can't figure out how to fix.

Red Ezra 07-27-2007 08:48 AM

i does sound like a corruption issue - or - maybe some sort of trim mode applied itself somehow

Since 9:10 viruses were written to be spread via Outlook I figured there was no reason to use that program long ago.

Yeah, that is what I was afraid of. Luckily, most emails I send I cc to myself so it is just a matter of knowing where I filtered them to in order to find them.

What was weird was that the other day all of my mail personalities/accounts were working except my Dominant one. I decided to do a system restore (which should not effect emails) to two days prior.

That fixed the problem, but I seem to have lost something in the process.

Actually, now that I think about it, the reason I did the sys restore was because I noticed that a "fast index" kept rotating thru my different personalities. I bet that is what it was doing then, deleting emails from my out box.

Guess I should count myself lucky that it wasn't a more important box.

I noticed the same thing in the last few days! I keep sending messages, and I can't find my sent messages. How weird.

And yes - we've been using Eudora since around 95. We've tried several different mail programs throughout the years, but the biggest problem is that we've had is that most mail clients won't allow you to set up multiple personalities. We have different email addresses for different services and companies, so we need to be able to keep all the mail in one place and have it check together, rather than using multiple mail clients.

That is very strange that you had the exact same problem. And I agree, the multiple personalities is a GREAT feature. I have 10 of them, and need each and every one.

quantum-x 07-27-2007 09:06 AM

I used to have the same problem w/ Eudora.
If you're ever feeling like a change, I can really, really recommend Thunderbird [1.6 over 2.0]

Multiple personalities, and much much smoother running [and i've got about 200k emails]

dissipate 07-27-2007 09:08 AM

wow... i haven't heard of eudora for ... who the hell knows how long.

Nowadays i just forward all my email to a gmail account (you can send outgoing from any account of yours from there also)... so all my emails are in one giant searchable database i can use from any machine

I only use my laptop, so that is a benefit I would never utilize.
