Escort Biz is right again. You will like living in the major cities in Cali.
L.A. is really really nice but you have to have your own support system out there. Good friends and family are a plus when you live out there so you don't have to deal with a lot of the superficial people that you will meet when you are new. There are more nice restaurants than we have and the weather is great. Nitelife kinda sucks in comparison (2:00am !?) but everything else makes up for it as long as you have some cash. San Diego is beautiful and peaceful. It's kinda like Long Island but prettier. The Bay area is the nicest place you can live if you are moving from here. The people are great. Tons of restaurants and great nitelife. It's a real city with a lot of options. Palm Springs is kinda... well... are you retiring? |
I've spent 28 years in major N. & S. California cities, 1 year in Hawaii. Having spent 2 years in the Boston area, I'd have to say:
It all depends on what kind of person you are. That said, I'm sure you'll appreciate the greater personal freedom, unless you end up in L.A. L.A. will be a good place to live again when we run out of fossil fuels. Good parts are Santa Monica, B.H., Topanga Canyon, Glendale, Westwood, Manhattan Beach (sorta), Palos Verdes, and Newport. It's a giant oxygen bar. |
I grew up in Flushing, Queens. Joined the Marines at age 19. Got sent to San Diego for 6 months. Loved it. Cheaper to live there than NYC, good weather, decent clubs... Don't do LA. If you love NYC you will probably hate LA. Plastic plastic plastic. Nobody can drive there (that goes for most of SoCal, but ESPECIALLY Los Angeles).

One word.....
Earthquake :thumbsup |

Jay Leno once said, you can die in an earthquake, but at least you'll have a nice day beforehand. |
I've been in a couple of quakes. They are waaay overrated! I'll take a good 3 minute quake every two years over 3 months of freezing cold and snow anyday!

Tara, depends on what you're looking for. If you absolutely must live the fabulous nightlife (a la Manhattan), you're not going to be happy in anything less than LA but LA is NOTHING like Manhattan - two entirely different things.
One thing you'll learn is that the West Coast actually likes to LIVE their lives (get outside, do things in the sunshine, etc) - not just work, eat out and drink (like Manhattan). Originally from Seattle, lived in San Diego for two years, lived in Manhattan for two years, got the fuck out of dodge and back to heaven on earth. Come out and visit.. see for yourself! =) |
