Compaq computers, yay or nay?
I saw a great deal at bestbuy.com for a Compaq, but I've read some bad stuff about Compaq on some of the boards? Is it a good brand? Have you ever had major problems with any Compaq brand pc's?
And yes, I know building a pc is the best way, but there's no way I'm gonna attempt to do that, my only option is to buy! So is it yay or nay for Compaq's? |
This is the deal I found
http://www.bestbuy.com/detail.asp?e=...cat=490&scat=0 Can I do better than this or is this a great deal? :helpme |
I don't recommend buying any compaq model you can buy locally. If you want a good computer go online or buy a business class model. Hell, if you want help shopping for one give me a call and I'll help you... toll free... but whatever you do, don't buy a Presario!

A friend of mine bought a Compaq a few years ago & had nothing but trouble with it...
...of course, he has two little kids & a wife who love to play around with it too... |
Dude your getting a Dell
I have owned 6 and never had any problems... thier service and support has always been top notch. :2 cents: |
Thanks everyone for your responses. I've been checking out some of the deals at Dell's outlet, but some of those pc's don't have a sound card... I'm not too computer tech savvy, so does that mean that there's no sound at ALL if you get one without a
sound card?! Thanks! |
try pricewatch.com bought a few computers there. I think they even have dell and a few other stuff. Nice prices.

NAY!

I just got a good deal on an H-P (which I understand is built by Compaq). This is just for a second desktop machine for bookkeeping chores and correspondence mainly. My assistant uses it. It supposedly has a faster processor than my put-together graphics machine, but WOW...they have loaded it down so much with H-P specific and special functions and software that it takes forever to load and run a program.
Next time, I'll just have the local computer shop put together another machine for me. The one I usually use will put together a very basic machine for $400. For what I paid for the H-P ($649) , I could soup up that $400 machine real good. |
Photogirl ... soundcards start at $15 USD ... you can even get an OEM Soundblaster Live! card ( recommended) for under $50.
find a system that meets your needs, and buy the Soundcard aftermarket ... soundcards are 90% Plug 'n' Pray ... |
They make good servers, but their desktops suck ass... I think they used to be Packard Bell... stay away from them and build your own machine, or get a Dell or Gateway...
|
fuckin compaqs are dirty and shitty comps, i recommend a DELL since i have had mine for 3 years and shes runnin almost like new
bunky |
Compaq has a funny way with building their computers with proprietary parts which make it near impossible for you to repair or upgrade without going to a dealer. Pooh on that.
I'd say if you want a quick and easy turnkey computer that is gonna do everything you need, go to dell.com and build it online, they adjust the price while letting you mix and match pretty much every component you'd want or wouldn't want. The support provided by Dell is fantastic as well. |

MOTHERBOARD - $1400 - NO JOKE. This was a few years ago, but I wouldn't trust them They even used different screws on some of their computers. |
unseenworld hp is not built by compaq, hp just bought compaq.
like the others said...Id' buy a dell, it's more stable . |
Bought a compaq last year AMD Athalon and gave it away to dank.
I like HP. |

damn. I can build you a pc and ship it to you :)
in my experience, HP sucks ass - everyone I have dealt with broke at some point. Compaq too (although the first computer that I purchased was a compaq 286 ages ago and it rocked).. Stay away like everyone else said. Dell servers are decent machines, if a bit overpriced - I have had few problems with them only but I honestly have never used a Dell PC... If you can, go to a local computer outlet (in Vancouver we have half a dozen computer stores within a block it seems) and ask them to build you a machine matching the specs on the Dell and you will probably save a hundred bucks or so. Don't be intimidated by your pc - pull it apart and it is practically self explanatory to put back together. |
DON'T BUY A COMPAQ!
I bought one a few years ago...nothing but trouble. I hate Compaq now. I swore I would cost them business and I have, but I want to cost them more. DON'T BUY A COMPAQ! YOU WILL BE SORRY IF YOU DO! |
Don't buy a compaq or a gateway
Go for the Dell |
But do you like the specs of the Dell that I posted above?
And is that a good price for all the features? Thanks |
BUMP!
|
phogirl, i'll build you a computer, it'll be better than any compaq, dell, etc
especially don't get that compaq you originally posted, the compaq models with amd processors are complete shit |
Compaq :repuke
|
Don't buy those girls computers, for for a man's pc: http://www.alienware.com Now THAT is a pc!

or you coyuld build it yourself for almost half the price |
Sure... If you know how to build one. :thumbsup
|
Get a Dell! I used to only buy Compaqs i never had any trouble with them but now that HP owns Compaq i'll never buy another one all HP makes is shit.

I am on my fourth generation computer with them, having started with a PII 166, which still works as a file server for us. They build for speed, compatibility and they are nice guys. Their prices are great! My days of buying off the shelf systems are over. I get a bigger bang for my buck when I have these guys build my computers for me, using great parts that mesh well. |
Workstations/desktop NO
Servers YES |
I've had a presario for over 2 years. never any problems. just upgraded to a vpr from best buy. 2.26 with the p4 & it has the capability of upgrading to the dual harddrive system to pull data even faster. it was a floor model, paid $979.00 for it. just setting it up now. btw the compaq is a celeron & was cheap.
|
Compag makes a good system, but i'd stay away from their home computers. They make nice powerful work machines though.
I worked for Dell for years so i am a little biased and usually reccomend them. If you are buying a nice system, fairly loaded i can most likely get you a good deal. hit me up on icq, and ill give you a number to call. Check out http://www.dell.com/ca/en/bsd/produc...dimen_8200.htm and http://www.dell.com/ca/en/bsd/produc...rkstations.htm the second link is the best of the best, wicked system. |
Owned a COmpaq and hated it. Right off the bat it would not talk to my existing printer and scanner. Since then, just little headaches all the way.
Had a new machine built at the local computer store with the parts I wanted for editing video, and a new monitor and pulled it in under $1200. Works great except for the worm I let sneak in last week. |
First of all...
HP and Compaq merged. That doesn't mean HP makes Compaq computers. Also, Compaq isn't Packard Bell. Packard Bell is probably the only major brand that made computers worse than Compaqs. If you want to get a brand name PC, don't get a Compaq. Maybe a Sony if you like high-quality premium machines, or a Dell if you like a mediocre default machine. You can save a lot of money by getting a white box. |
I bought a Compaq and had to replace Monitor the first month as it burst out, the hard disk the second month as it collapsed and the CD drive the third month as it won't go in back. This is my fourth month and i am prepared for my Keyboard.
