Which industry is bigger?

Adult? Or Music?

JFPdude 09-04-2002 10:07 AM

I'd be willing to bet they are equal in size.

heymatty 09-04-2002 10:09 AM

Last time I read adult industry was doing $800 million a month in the US.

heymatty 09-04-2002 10:10 AM

Tobacco was doing about $120 million a month

Mikeee 09-04-2002 10:14 AM

Im sure its a close call. But I think music is bigger, only because anyone of any age can legaly buy, sell, trade music. Not adult content. its limited to adults only, and beleive me... the teens make a huge $$$ difference.

GiaN 09-04-2002 10:17 AM

They are pretty close, maybe music has a little advantage because of what Mikeee said... teens make a big difference

I don't know about the Music Industry, but the Adult Entertainment Industry is pulling in 16 billion a year.

That's more than all 4 major American Sports combined.

Wizzo 09-04-2002 10:31 AM

On the Net, Adult is BIGGER!!:winkwink:

Which Industry makes more, Film or Music?
My guess would be film, but I don't know for sure.

I think you mistook that figure as a per day figure .. tobacco isn't as big as it is doing 120m a month .. lol

I've heard that all of the adult industry is about the same size as the hollywood industry .. ~8 bil a year.

salsbury 09-04-2002 11:08 AM

here's the RIAA's claim about the music industry: http://www.riaa.com/MD-Tracking.cfm
~$40B, them being 1/3rd of that.

take that with a grain of salt tho, they've been known to inflate their numbers a lot.

i'm reading that porn is around $10-15B.
http://www.ojr.org/ojr/business/1017866651.php

film is probably bigger than porn(waaay smaller than music) but not by much - the MPAA does an even better job of inflating their value in people's minds.
http://www.mpaa.org/useconomicreview...mic/sld001.htm
a piddly $8.4B in the box office. they make some money from rentals but it isn't clear from their site how much.

again keep in mind, they're also known to inflate their values.

Theo 09-04-2002 11:28 AM

music industry is wayyyyyy larger than the adult.

And the Music Industry says that MP3 is killing their profits... LYING BASTARDS!!! The music industry made 14 Billion dollars last year, up from 13.2 Billion the year before! (Don't quote me on the numbers, but it's something along those lines)

I'd say the two are pretty damn close though, that's for sure

do you mean 16 billion in total or 16 billion online

bushwacker 09-04-2002 01:13 PM

gambling....legally about 8billion a year and as much as 5 times that illegally:thumbsup

Pornwolf 09-04-2002 01:20 PM

Music. Definitely... for now at least.

The music biz is a larger beast. In the US alone record sales have hit $5.6 billion at midyear which should bring it to around $11 or $12 billion at years end. That's just in the U.S. which only accounts for 33% of the total global market. You also have to include the publishing revenue and concert & merchandising which should effectively double the final number. That's a lotta cash!

On a side note, as some of you know the music and broadcasting biz is my other job and has been for the past 14 years. Being one of the few guys that understands both the tech side and record side my company has been commissioned to figure out how to deal with this file sharing dilemma by some of the bigwigs. I have a good idea on how to fix the situation. I would love to have conversations with any of you guys if you have ideas. The way adult webamasters look at things is totally different than anyone else on the net and I think everyone here can shape the way things turn out on the net as a whole.
