Regarding the Explosion in New York

It was a old steam pipe that blew up.

All line into grand central are out. Tomorrow will be toture on commuters.

The pipes are old and they eventually will burst.

This makes me recall the weird stuff that happened when I lived in Manhatten in the '90s. On very cold winter nights the oldest pipes in the city would freeze and burst. Some of these were and probably still are from 1870s.

It became common place to have manhole covers suddenly take off into the air several stories and come crashing down a top of moving and parked cars alike. Somehow no one ever got killed or even hurt; probably because it would mostly happen at the coldest time, the middle of the night. Still, NYC is pretty busy even then compared to most places.
