Pagans say Homer is pants

Pagans have hit out at a 180ft drawing of Homer Simpson painted in a field next to their famous fertility symbol - the Cerne Abbas giant.

The 17th century chalk outline of the naked, sexually aroused, club-wielding giant is believed by many to be a symbol of ancient spirituality.

Many couples also believe the 180ft giant, which is carved in the hillside above Cerne Abbas, Dorset, is an aid to fertility.

The giant drawing of Homer, brandishing a doughnut, was painted next to the well-endowed figure in a publicity stunt to promote The Simpsons Movie released later this month, reports Sky News.

It has been painted with water-based biodegradable paint which will wash away as soon as it rains.

Ann Bryn-Evans, joint Wessex district manager for The Pagan Federation, said: "It's very disrespectful and not at all aesthetically pleasing.

"We were hoping for some dry weather but I think I have changed my mind. We'll be doing some rain magic to bring the rain and wash it away."

She added: "I'm amazed they got permission to do something so ridiculous. It's an area of scientific interest."

Apparently you only read the news stuff. In the last week, for example, I have 'talked' frequently about blogs,rss,..even just shared vacation snaps. You have watched me post for years so if you don't like the quirky news threads you can just skip them and perhaps contribute to the 'talk' threads I post rather than just popping up to swipe.

Any way back to serious matters like Homer in his pants.

On the BBC news when they mentioned it even the newscasters more or less took a 'oh, those party pooper pagans' line and smirked through the story.

Has to be soon. I saw the trailer in cinemas on both sides of the Atlantic. The USA trailer was funnier than the one I saw in the UK. The spider-pig bit actually made me laugh outloud -rare for a trailer.

I thought Canadians would be more up on British slang than most.

In the UK 'pants' means underwear..as in underpants and to say something is 'pants' means it is crap but in a light hearted way.

We canadians say something is crap when it's crap. Crap is a very versatile word, no need to fuck with it and make cutsie little Britishisms out of it. :D

I heard a lot of Britishisms in Canada when I was there last month. I am sure I heard them when I was there in the past too but I hadn't spent enough time in the UK to pick up on them. In reality, it actually felt good :)

Actually the different meaning for pants is generally one I have had trouble ingratiating into my use of language. I have had strange looks when talking about changing my pants or going to buy pants ..usually the looks are from men. Pants, as in we would say, are more trousers.
