Tip of the day: Don't text message while driving

Cell phone records show a text message was sent from the phone belonging to the driver, Bailey Goodman, at 10:05:52. A reply was sent to her phone at 10:06:29. Thirty-eight seconds later, someone called 911 to report the accident that killed Bailey and her friends.
Of course they can't say for certain who in the vehicle was sending the text messages, but one thing is for certain.... we have a new danger to look out for on the road. Along with people fixing their hair and makeup, berating their kids in the back seat, eating, and yapping on a hand-held cell phone we may now have those who think they can be sending and reading incoming text messages while driving.

Time to buy a used army tank.

I HATE when people text and drive...I told my oldest that if I caught her texting and driving again she would lose her phone AND her car. Its just too scary

Spunky 07-16-2007 06:39 PM

Almost as bad as yacking on the damn thing..they don't have their full concentration on the road

Talking on your phone without hands-free is dangerous enough as it is. Writing text messages on your phone is even more distracting. Quite frankly, if you do it, you're being an idiot.

shekinah 07-16-2007 06:48 PM

Quite scary.. I should refrain myself from doing the same kind of thing:helpme

I came in to say exactly that.

bhutocracy 07-16-2007 06:59 PM

It wouldn't be a bad form of Darwinian selection if it didn't also take out other innocent road users. People and their frigging phones...

CDSmith 07-16-2007 07:01 PM

I'm reading a media forum thread on this... apparently Bailey's best friend "Riley" was trailing behind her SUV in another vehicle and they were texting back and forth from one vehicle to the other.

Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.

Highway + high school girls + cell phone txt msging = road kill.

Furious_Male 07-16-2007 07:05 PM

That accident is pretty to local to me its been all over the news. Some people are saying that one of the other girls was using the drivers phone. Unlikely but I guess its easier for them to think that way.

Its a tragedy regardless.

BlackCrayon 07-16-2007 07:05 PM

Thats the stupidest thing ever, well maybe not ever but its pretty stupid. I don't even like dialing numbers on the cell while im driving.

D 07-16-2007 07:08 PM

Darwin wrote a book that discussed the process at work here, imho.

crazydude 07-16-2007 07:29 PM

you definitely gotta be looking out for glowing green laps and steering wheels on the 405

AsianDivaGirlsWebDude 07-16-2007 07:48 PM

I am posting this message as I am driving... :error :winkwink:

Monique Niccole 07-16-2007 07:51 PM

That is really sad. Five young women all dead over text messaging. I do not know why people do all the stupid shit they do while driving. I saw someone the other day driving while reading a newspaper.

Sarah_Jayne 07-17-2007 03:14 AM

In the UK one of more recent big train crashes (few years back) was partially caused by a car driver texting while crossing tracks.

You missed cab drivers who watch TV while driving :(

Why didn't they just talk on the phone? That's not too safe either but safer than texting. Nothing is much sadder than young life snuffed out because of stupidity. Of course 99.9999% won't learn from this and ths shit will happen again and again.

Vick! 07-17-2007 05:40 AM

my younger bro do that, how can I stop him?

Funbrunette 07-17-2007 05:44 AM

You can tell when someone is on the phone or texting...They drive slow and are all over the damn place. We use to only have to worry about drunks, now we have to watch out with anyone with a cell....EVERYONE! :warning

Tsk...tsk....tsk!

Violetta 07-17-2007 06:23 AM

I try to avoid it at any cost. I dont even like talking in the phone while driving.

Ravage 07-17-2007 06:27 AM

I normally do not answer my cell when I'm driving. Almost all calls are not that important that cannot be returned after once you get to your destination or a place to stop.

On the rare occasion I do answer it when driving, I keep it short and to the point.

Same here.

Yet you still see loads taking corners while holding a phone to their ear... :disgust

zeruel 07-17-2007 06:31 AM

its ok... as long as you know what you are doing... :)

Tom_PM 07-17-2007 06:36 AM

People change into complete morons when they get into their cars. Just admit it. If you aren't talking or texting, you're blasting music or just plain pissed off. Why? Because YOU are on the road now, and every other person in a car was placed there by Satan just to piss you off.

For teens it's even worse. Studies show that when a teen/young driver is alone in the car, their accident rate is average. But as you add friends into the car, the chance of an accident jumps dramatically. So if you have a new driver in your house, forbid them from driving anyone anywhere, seriously.

I'm sure that's what the girl said too.

he-fox 07-17-2007 07:33 AM

not using a blue-tooth or hands-free device while you're driving is as retarded as using it while you're not driving.

Kevin Cunningham 07-17-2007 08:20 AM

Or while riding a bike downtown Toronto.

I'd have to say blasting music is still safer than anything that takes your eyes off the road repeatedly like texting messages would. As long as the person blasting the music is watching his mirrors and is aware of surrounding vehicles and traffic conditions and watching for any oncoming emergency vehicles I don't see where that's even in the same league as this.

But you do make a solid point or two.

candyflip 07-17-2007 10:54 AM

These girls were really good friends of my little cousin. So many things wrong about that situation. My feelings are mixed about the entire thing.

It's interesting to see that this is getting coverage outside of Rochester.

NinjaSteve 07-17-2007 11:19 AM

If they ban talking on a cell phone while driving, they should also ban text messaging along side with it.

they had some thing in vancouver for a week where they shut down the use of cellphones going over 60 kmph.. not sure what happened in the end, but there is ways for them to do it

rowan 07-17-2007 12:15 PM

Texting while driving is absolutely ridiculous. I wouldn't even glance at the display briefly to find or enter an 8 digit number I want to call, let alone spend more time reading or typing out a text message.

If it was indeed the driver texting, she must have been seriously distracted. :(
