Brujah 07-16-2007 03:50 PM

Nice name.. what a deal!

D 07-16-2007 03:53 PM

I use that site network at least daily.

Hopefully it won't go to shit now.

Kinda figured something was up when they started using pop-over advertising a couple months ago... I was feeling all empowered because I wrote them an email, and the next day, they stopped using those ads. :1orglaugh

You should also feel stupid because it was 100m for dictionary.com , thesaurus.com and reference.com combined not just dictionary.com.

Iron Fist 07-16-2007 03:53 PM

Maybe dicksonharry.com will sell for $100,000?

madawgz 07-16-2007 03:56 PM

what a sale :thumbsup

uno 07-16-2007 03:58 PM

Damnit, I used that several times a day also.

Sosa 07-16-2007 03:58 PM

Whoever the sell was just cashed in!

tranza 07-16-2007 04:02 PM

Damn, that's quite a big sale indeed....

Eddie, I'll always feel smarter than you though, so it's all good, ya' deep sea troll :thumbsup

StarkReality 07-16-2007 04:44 PM

Great deal for the seller and perfect timing I'd say...let's see how long the hype lasts. It's certainly an awesome package, but with an EBITDA of $2.9 million last year they better find more effective ways to monetize it.

The Dawg 07-16-2007 04:45 PM

Thats alot of coin. :):(:disgust:1orglaugh

pornask 07-16-2007 04:50 PM

Very resourceful site. Have been a frequenter for years.

TheJimmy 07-16-2007 04:51 PM

They scored.

Lykos 07-16-2007 04:53 PM

lot of money.

Eman - PG 07-16-2007 04:53 PM

In 2006, it (Lexico Publishing Group) generated revenues of $7 million, EBITDA of $2.9 million and net income of $2.8 million.

They got 14x yearly revenue. That's pretty damn good for an online business based on ad revenue.

Bake 07-16-2007 04:55 PM

Dam thats a great site I use allmost daily but 100m thats some real cash

[db] 07-16-2007 05:11 PM

Well, that network is one of the best resources around. Hopefully the new owners won't turn it to shit or start charging a subscription fee for the basic services.

sharp 07-16-2007 05:28 PM

lot of money, but yeah, I use it daily, too.

guti 07-16-2007 05:33 PM

Fuck!! I wanted to pay 200M for it! Shit what will I do now :(

Angelo22 07-16-2007 05:41 PM

Wow

couldnt the buyer just get himself a paper dictionary like everyone else got for less than $100 instead of spending milions for the online one?

DaddyHalbucks 07-16-2007 05:49 PM

There's no money in domains.

Lol, "Dictionary.com sells for $100M." Not quite.

Answers.com "has entered into a purchase agreement to acquire Lexico Publishing Group, LLC", of which, some of their assets include Dictionary.com, Thesaurus.com, and Reference.com. They're acquiring the company and their established businesses for $100M.

Quick Buck 07-16-2007 05:52 PM

great for the domain industry, but a terrible price for this... based on the net income of the site alone answers.com just paid almost 40x yearly earnings.

Thats a pretty fucking huge bet that the Internet will remain in it's current shape and form for the next 40 years... plus a *huge* chunk of dictionary.com's traffic is paid not organic.

I'd be willing to bet my life's savings that the internet will not only maintain, it will grow beyond what you or I can imagine in the next 15 years. And a word on a .com as rudimentary as "dictionary" will not fall short.

In 20 years, we may have gotten away form any kind of .com, or the internet as we know it, but those domains will have served their purpose well for the new owners.

I believe that within 20 years the Web will be navigated using only Semaphore. I just started studying it so that I can keep ahead of everyone else.

Zoose 07-16-2007 08:02 PM

/me uses dictionary.com to look up semaphore

14x is good - but I suspect the new owners see ways to match up the sites with things that they have going on to increase the overall revenue. That is the key to a deal like this, the feeling and the plan to make more than the site(s) currently make when you buy them.

As others have said, hopefully any changes made to the sites won't take away the utility and make them worthless. I use it all the time when playing scrabble (nice to have a laptop to settle disputes!)

Lol.

I have to be honest - I just used wikipedia to do the same thing.

But your solution's a lot more topical. :1orglaugh

Doctor Dre 07-16-2007 11:57 PM

I guess the guys buying this must have a good idea to monetize it.

If the development of technology continues as it did in the past 50 years, it will take MUCH LESS than 20 years for things to change DRASTICLY around here.

The computing power we will have in 10 years alone will be INSANE by today's standards.
