Canadians can now mention bombs, guns at airports

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Air travelers in Canada who make comments about bombs and guns will from now on only be arrested if it is clear they are making a serious threat, officials said on Wednesday.

The Canadian Air Transport Safety Authority, trying to clamp down on screeners who alert police every time they hear alarming words, has issued a bulletin urging staff to show more discretion.

A person who announces "You better look through my suitcase carefully, because there's a bomb in there," "I am going to set fire to this airplane with this blowtorch" or "The man in seat 32F has a machine gun" will still be arrested.

But someone who remarks "Your hockey team is going to get bombed (badly beaten) tonight," "Hi Jack!" or "You don't need to frisk me, I'm not carrying a weapon" will first be warned about their behavior.

Brigitte Caron, a spokeswoman for the authority, compared the new system to handing out yellow warning cards in soccer. A player can receive one yellow card and still stay in the game.

"Sometimes it's just a joke and the person will say 'I'm sorry, I was upset'," she said. In recent years more than 100 passengers have been arrested for making threatening remarks in Canadian airports, she added.

Airports in the state meanwhile, still have no sense of humor....although it's understandable why...

I can understand that you don't want to mess around with issues like blowing people up, but that law was doing more harm than good, although I'm not sure of how many people actually got screwed by it. Anyone know of anyone who did?

I joked about something being explosive at the ft laud airport once. I won't be doing that again.

Seriously, are some people just missing that little guy that should tell them, "Don't make jokes about bombs and guns in airports." ??

I don't see the big deal. You know not to do it and we SHOULD understand why.

Granted, someone WITH a bomb or a gun probably ISN'T going to say anything, but still.

Idle chit-chat while in line to board a plane like

"Man I was so bombed last night..."

"You should have seen the explosive situation in the boardroom yesterday..."

"Ever have one of those days where your good intentions blow up in your face?"

should not be getting anyone in trouble. Only a pack of overzealous idiots would arrest someone for this, something that anyone might say without thinking or meaning any harm. The same goes for the makers of such zero-tolerance laws.

Nice to see my country exercising some common sense about it.

That I'd agree with and admittedly I didn't read the article. If that's what they're talking about then no, nobody should be arrested for that.

I was thinking more along the lines of, "Be careful when you open up THAT suitcase 'cause it may blow up."

That SHOULD be cause for someone to be arrested imo. If for no other reason than they're so stupid, they shouldn't be roaming the streets by themselves.

saying something like that would be stupid if you're in a airport..

I don't see why it's a big deal anyways? Couldn't do it before and everyone got by just fine, why would it matter now?

tranza 07-13-2007 02:53 PM

What's the problem with "Hi Jack!"??

Brother Bilo 07-13-2007 02:55 PM

Besides, it's Canada. Nobody takes them seriously anyways.

yes, years ago

kid on a hs trip, said something stupid about bombs, had to stay in Canada with a teacher while everyone else went home. I'm sure it's happened a lot.

Freedom of speech doesn't cover things that may cause harm to lots of people. That's like saying I have the freedom of speech to yell FIRE! in a crowded building. Doesn't work that way.

AM900 07-13-2007 06:11 PM

read my post again, and read it carefully and see what i said

threating someone is something different i know that, but these people have said stupid things, they aren't threating anyone, they are being just dum and stupid
