If You Live In The USA Do You Text Message?

Just wanted to get an idea of how many people are text messaging in the USA? I know everyone and their dog text in Europe...

Would love to see if the trend has changed much in the states.

Look forward to seeing the results :thumbsup

GhengisBong 07-11-2007 05:37 AM

texting is big

Violetta 07-11-2007 05:50 AM

Yeah.. in norway and europe it's crazy.

Jace 07-11-2007 05:50 AM

I prefer to text, I hate using the phone

GatorB 07-11-2007 06:10 AM

takes to long to write shit. Only good if the message is short. I don't get people that text as conversation.

Ron2k1 07-11-2007 06:13 AM

Texting is the same as SMS right?

Tom_PM 07-11-2007 06:16 AM

I use IM programs on my computers, but dont have any wireless handheld texting devices.

C_U_Next_Tuesday 07-11-2007 06:19 AM

after my bill came in for $125 over the regular amount.. I discovered my son took up text messaging..I just cut it off of our account..now we cant recieve nor send text messages. weird that my company will not let me add the $10 monthly text package to my plan..I have a family plan with 3 lines..geesh..fucks just want more money out of me.

amandaspost 07-11-2007 07:39 AM

Not often

Sosa 07-11-2007 07:40 AM

yeah, my wife and I both have unlimited data/text plans.

TG Rebecca 07-11-2007 08:11 AM

Rochard 07-11-2007 08:16 AM

every phone can do that since 1995 or so - but i remember popping a lot of texting cherries at shows over the last years when i sent SMS to american or canadien people and they told me they didn't even know their phone could do that :1orglaugh

What he said.

I also keep a multi IM client running on my phone.

mattz 07-11-2007 09:27 AM

Yeah I text often, my plan has unlimited text messages for $55 a month

topbucksdarlene 07-11-2007 10:22 AM

All the time!

BlackCrayon 07-11-2007 10:29 AM

North american cell companies need to change their plans if text messaging is going to take off here. I know my girlfriends plan only allows her to text 25 times per month. Pretty much useless if you are texting back and forth.

dude, the T9word shit is the shiznit!

it is a feature that autocompletes sentences for you based on what digit you pushed

I will soon have a treo though, so I will have the full qwerty

jimmy-3-way 07-11-2007 10:33 AM

Unfortunately.

Alas it's the only way to hook up with 20-something chicks.

Gentle_Ben 07-11-2007 10:34 AM

My dog just learned to text over here! LOL

When I'm home in TO I text people and they don't even know how to view it or it goes unnoticed so I just don't bother. But really, it just has to do with cell pricing structures I think. In US/CAN you basically get a flat rate per month with a certain amount of minutes so its cheap as hell to call. But here we pay 15 cents a minute plus a connection charge, or 15 cents a text. So too much blabbing can add up.

wtf? all phone companies have a unlimited option....I know mine with sprint is $4 a month or some little amount

Don't get too excited. The QWERTY on the Treo is the ONLY thing I don't like about the phone. I have the 700p and the buttons drive me crazy. My girl just got the 755p and it's only slightly improved.

I've been texting since 2001 with my blue Nokia 8890.

Its a whole lot easier with the iTap and stuff now though. And the keyboards like on the Pearl make it easier too.
I still dont know how some people can text so god damn fast though.

Canada has way better texting plans then the states though. Even the basic plans come with 125 texts and then like 10 cents each after that. And if you get the bundle pack with call wait, call display and stuff like that you get unlimited texting too. I really cant see how texting would take up more airway data then talking.
I've been sending pin to pin with other people with blackberrys lately though. Not to sure why though since I have unlimited texting, lol

Me too - but I think it might be a phobia

SilkyJohnson 07-11-2007 10:47 AM

I would rather text than call someone in most cases...unless it's something I need to know/talk about that minute. Plus you can avoid un-needed convo's alot easier with texting.

Axarsys 07-11-2007 10:47 AM

I dislike sending or receiving text messages. I find it's rather pointless, why spend my time writing a message when I can call and hear the voice, determine the state of mind and get over what's needed quicker?

AmeliaG 07-11-2007 10:48 AM

Yes, but not particularly often.

I don't know if that is accurate....I think T-Mobile gives you 300 texts with their $40 plan and you can pay $5/month for 500 texts and $10/month for unlimited.

Peaches 07-11-2007 10:52 AM

I text like a freaking wild woman. Now that I've gone from the Razr to the Crackberry, I find I can write entire novellas in just a few seconds :)

DH, did you download a different browser to post on java boards? I think you bought the Curve also and there are some boards I can read but can't post on. :(

teg0 07-11-2007 10:54 AM

I send and receive a lot. I've even wrote various php scripts that text message a phone after a certain action is performed.

Sometimes its not that easy to talk to someone, like if its noisy out, or if it has to be quiet. Or if they only have a few moments every little bit.

I can text pretty fast, but sometimes when texting some women.... fuck jsut give me a moment to reply already, lol. I'll get like 3 messages befor I have responded to the first message.

woj 07-11-2007 11:05 AM

On a normal phone it's a pain in the ass to type anything longer than 3 words... yea, I know there is t9, but I don't really find it that great in practice...

The only people that say its not that good are the ones that dont really know how to use it.
I used to hate it untill I was shown how to really use it, now its all good :)

stev0 07-11-2007 11:08 AM

Been texting my ass off up here in Canada

Brother Bilo 07-11-2007 11:10 AM

I'm all about texting. It lets you get straight to what you need instead of wasting 10 or 15 minutes with the Hi how are you, part of the call. Text 4 Life bitches!

yea, you might be right, but really I never use it... I don't really encounter many situations where texting would be useful...

Maybe i should look into it but phone plans are expensive enough...45 bucks for 250 daytime minutes 1000 night/weekend with unlimited internet, 25 text messages and call display. You guys probably have better prices in the states.

Nope i'm using the default browser, GFY looks like shit on my curve but JBM looks good. (Sorry GFY I would love to post here on my curve but it's just not doable).

My pearl had a TERRIBLE browser, it was absolutely useless I could'nt browse anything other than the rogers website effectively.

Haven't tried JBM but there's an investment board I post on that uses the same software and I can't post on it. Sometimes it won't even let me access a message - I have to go the one before or after and hit "previous", lol.

All in all, I LOVE the damn thing though :)

That does sound like a shitty plan for 45 bucks man...I think 40 bucks with T-Mobile will get you unlimited nights and weekends plus 300 anytime minutes and 300 texts...don't quote me but I think that is accurate.

you're in a traffic jam, you will be late..

nothing easier than just writing a short text saying "i'll be late 15 mins" - why spend a call and conversation on that?

What if your in a busy public place? or somewhere that you need to be quiet, or anywhere that talking on your phone is just kinda rude.
To avoid long distance charges is a good reason I use it too.

VB has an option to have a wap version built into it. I dont know why more boards dont use it. Use alot less data too.
I use opera on my Pearl, and most things are alright, i mean the screen in small.. but what do you expect.

jeffrey 07-11-2007 11:49 AM

double post.

T - Bone 07-11-2007 12:17 PM

I was just discussing the value of text messaging last night with a teammate as I was enjoying a cold frosty beverage after our weekly beat down out with my softball team "Desk Rage".

Instead of a long good night conversation with the girlfriend outside in the cold, I can send a couple of endearing texts and she can go to bed happy and I can continue to enjoy watching the rest of SportsCenter.

I'm very pro Text.

I hope this means there's a new project in the mix. :)

d-null 07-11-2007 12:32 PM

texting is a good 'icebreaker' that keeps contact and can be a prelude to an actual phone call. "lunch"... "yeah starving" then you call.... or "lunch".... "just ate, sorry" then you don't bother calling and save having to listen to the excuse etc
