"Surveillance veil" Coming to NYC?

Quote:

It looks like New York City will soon be seeing a slew of new ever-watchful eyes, as The New York Times reports that the city is set to get a London-style "surveillance veil" that would eventually consist of thousands of cameras monitoring vehicles and individuals alike. Dubbed the Lower Manhattan Security Initiative, the system will initially include more than 100 cameras that are expected to be in place by the end of this year, each of which will be able to read license plates and send out alerts is suspect vehicles are detected. That appears to just be the tip of the iceberg, however, with some 3,000 public and privately-owned cameras set to be put into service by the end of 2008, along with a series of pivoting gates that'll be installed at critical intersections, giving authorities the ability to block off traffic at the push of a button. From there it'll apparently grow even further, with the entire operation expected to be up and running by 2010. No word on head-mounted cams as of yet though.

...and so it begins...

I guess you'll try anything once crime gets so bad you can't. Hopefully it works.

When these cameras save a few 1000 lives by thwarting a terrorist attack will you say that?

I'm not sure about thwarting terrorist attacks, but if they'll stop every other person from getting mugged or car jacked, then I say it's worth it. Who cares if there are cameras that watch you walk around on the street? It's not like you're in the shower or anything.

Are you really THAT afraid of a terror attack? Are you really THAt willing to start giving up personal freedoms so you can feel a little safer? You notice those will probably go up in the nicer neighborhoods...not the ghettos where most of the crime is...

Yes, I will.

Would you be willing to live in a totalitarian police state if it meant your safety was guaranteed?

I know I wouldn't.

I think this is good news.

I'm am honest system, and other than a lead foot I have no fear of law enforcement. They can track my car all they want.

These cameras aren't going to thwart shit. London has around 400,000 cameras on 24/7. They all record, almost none are actively monitored. Their primary use is that if something happens they have it recorded and can see who did it. To have someone watching these cameras 24/7 would mean they would have to hire 10's of thousands of people and that's not going to happen.

one good thing about it is that if other crimes are committed in the streets there is going to be a good chance it will be caught on tape and the people that did it can be identified. Also if someone is falsely accused of something the tapes might be able to prove their alibi.

Yes.

Not one thousand and not one million "saved" lives are worth that shit.

And while you're in the department of saving lives, tell me more about how VTech regulations against students carrying concealed weapons (which is regulated but legal in that state) ensured the un-saving of 30 or so lives.

Fucking lemmingbrain.
