Cogent Bandwidth: Discuss

It had a terrible reputation a while back: What's it like now, especially in terms of reliability and throughput?

PS- Oh shit, a business thread!

Cogent is a way better these days, but still sucks

Cogent has improved immensly ( mainly due to a balance sheet cleanup during the telecoms collapse ).

Report quality/price is very good, but some will trash it because it is as cool as :thumbsup certain webhosts, even if they never experienced with them.

:2 cents:

In Europe it still sucks...Telia peers with them in Washington, so you have about 250ms from Frankfurt to Telia in Sweden when trough other carriers you have 20 ms...same with Tiscalli - peering in NY...not many EU carriers peer with Cogent in Europe....and btw how cheap is it now ? like 10$/Mb for a STM1 ? (155Mbs)

quantum-x 07-09-2007 03:13 PM

Thanks for the feedback.

I'm in FR atm, got a RCN box in the AMS/IX - which is super speeds for me, but.. timely.. for everyone else.

The better of two evils, I guess.

It's perfectly fine for content serving and other needs.

I dunno if I'd host tours and join pages on it still.

Anyone who says good things about cogent bandwidth is either

1) Selling cogent bandwidth or affiliated with a host that uses cogent bandwidth

2) Using cogent bandwidth for their sites and feels the need to defend their purchase. (Which for some reason is something people need to do, nobody will tell you "hey I host there and they suck", they won't say they suck until after they leave, at which point they will tell you that their current host is the bees knees)

If you were to switch a site from a premium carrier like Level3 to Cogent (or vice versa) you would see a substantial difference in speed and sales.
I know because I've done it.

Cogent runs a national network, and has redundant connections in the major metro areas, as well as redundant cross-country connections.

We have clients that are using several Gigs of Cogent and are happy with it.

Packets always will get through.

Today, they have a very large network. Scale was achieved via acquisitions for the most part (PSINet, Aleron, Verio T-1 business, etc.)

They have improved dramatically, its not the 1999 cogent anymore.

quantum-x

Our network is set up so you can use cogent with fail-over to our tier one network if cogent has any problems

ztik 07-09-2007 07:42 PM

Its funny how many people slam cogent but have nothing to back it up
