Mexican Tycoon Overtakes Bill Gates as World's Richest Man

Microsoft founder Bill Gates looks to have lost his title as the world's richest man, toppled from top spot by the Mexican telecoms tycoon Carlos Slim.

Three months ago the cigar-chomping Mr Slim quietly slipped past legendary US investor Warren Buffett to take second place in the global wealth league.

Now, thanks to a surge in the shares of his America Movil group, Mr Slim has claimed pole position, according to the Mexican online financial publication, Sentido Común.

Carlos Slim (born January 28, 1940 in Mexico City) is a Mexican businessman.[2] Slim has a substantial influence over the telecommunications industry in Mexico, equivalent to 8% of Mexico's gross domestic product, and in much of the rest of Latin America as well. He controls Teléfonos de México (Telmex), Telcel and América Móvil companies. Though he maintains an active involvement in his companies, his three sons Carlos Slim Domit, Marco Antonio Slim Domit and Patrick Slim Domit and his son in law Daniel Hajj Aboumrad, head them on a day-to-day basis.

A July 3, 2007 report by Mexican financial journalist Eduardo Garcia indicated that Slim's wealth had exceeded that of Microsoft founder Bill Gates, making him the world's wealthiest person. Recent gains in his shares of the America Movil group are largely responsible for his recent increase of wealth, boosting his fortune to an estimated $67.8 billion compared with $59.2 billion for the Microsoft mogul.

pornguy 07-04-2007 11:55 AM

He is the owner of the ONLY phone company in Mexico. It has sever names depending on the area, but he owns the entire thing.

He HOLDS 100% of the home phone business. and the internet connections suck.

For some reason "John Walton" patriarch on The Waltons TV show was in my mind before I realized you were talking about that other, considerably less nice union-crushing guy.

Yeah - he's for real and earning serious money every month - mainly based on monopolies in telecoms and a few other businesses..

Mexico has a fairly good international trading balance and appears to be continuing to rise.

You nailed it on the head. Mexican communications rates are unnecessarily high due to relatively closed markets.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Third World "capitalism"--aka monopoly cartel capitalism. The same sad situation holds here in the Philippines.

TTiger 07-05-2007 12:52 AM

Slim will not pass to the history like a genius of management.

Nothing to do with Warren Buffett or Bill Gates. he only benefitted from a certain economic situation (governmental corruption) to seize the telecommunications monopoly in Mexico and to be maintained in place since this time.

As Russian billionaires after coldwar, it more owes its success with its retord spirit that its extraordinary ideas.

Moreover,he is far from being a philanthropist…

$5 submissions 07-05-2007 12:54 AM

Yep. These types of "entrepreneurs" (I use that very loosely when describing 3rd world monopoly capitalists) actually FEAR real capitalism cuz real competition and economy democracy would actually force them to hustle for their bread. :2 cents:

This is true. One family's members would take up the top 50 if they decided to be listed.

They have been into triple digit billions for decades now.

voa 07-06-2007 02:26 AM

Can be true but we must wait for offical confirmation.
