Tip: how to help avoid photo radar tickets

ive thought about this a lot so im sharing my strategy (I am out of AZ):

you can get the reflective screen on your plate. i see a lot of cars with this, i have never tried it myself, mostly because i thought that *may* be a reason for a cop to pull you over and I didn?t want to risk that, but as I have an open mind, that is a good first defense

second, make sure that the car is in your spouses name. one of the checks the dept of motor vehicles does is try to match the gender. If they cant, they make send it still, but I understand they are much more likely to throw it out

if you get a ticket in the mail, ignore it. they will send a total of 3 and then send it over to a process server, who may or may not serve you at your residence.

If the process server comes, don?t answer the door. Generally, they have to hand it to somebody there. If you avoid them once, they probably wont come back. (They are making like $18 a serve so do the math)

If you get served and have the ticket in your hand (if your smart its addressed to your wife/husband, who wasn?t driving and there is a section that says ?if this picture is not of you, please enter the name and address of the person in the picture driving and you give them some accurate but old address of your spouse)

If its in your name, then you have a choice, a) go with the driving school (if you are eligible) or b)go to court and hope the cop doesn?t show up, don?t know the stats on that

Btw, there is a 4 month limit on the time between the occurrence and being able to enforce the ticket, so if its past 4 months, your in the clear

Drive safe

reflective plate covers are illegal in many places - anything covering a plate is often illegal. There is a company out of Ontario that sells a special spray that you can use on your plate that makes it super reflective, so when the flash goes off to record your plate, the plate is just a bright white area as the flash has been reflected back.

Your other items (like how many times they try to get you, etc) depends on your area. Some states (and Canadian provinces) will do "guilty until proven innocent" or will set a court date, and if you have not been served, issue a warrant for you to appear. Failure to appear in some states can lead to revocation of your license to drive until you appear.

Good luck.

exactly, great points, let me throw out that so many people have reflective plates, while it may be illegal, id bet cops dont pull people over for it that much, so id almost take the risk.

almost, problem is i dont want to risk coming back from a barbecue or something and having 2-3 beers there, i dont want some cop with a hair up his ass having a bad day finding a reason to pull me over.

Why not just follow the speed limits and traffic laws? Seems easy enough to me... :2 cents:

In america they have to prove it was you driving.

Wear a hat & sunglasses = problem solved

You may have to goto court, & it may cost you $500 for the lawyer, but you can get out of it every time.

I have 5-6 times now. Everytime it gets funnier.

They see on my record "thrown out". "thrown out", "thrown out" dismissed, dismissed....so now when i walk up they just just smile & wave me on.

Around here (london, ontario) the local police chief is trying to get cop planes to shoot radar, and wants anyone caught going 40 km/h over the posted speed limit to be charged with street racing, which will give them the option of seizing and crushing your car.

And of course radar detectors are illegal here. I picked a bad time to buy a sports car.

Ya not here it's been determined that the registered owner of the car is the one responsible for all of it's drivers so that person get the ticket no matter what :(

This is enough. I've been flashed a multitude of times as has the little woman and never been served.

The spray stuff works as well as all the stuff to make you last longer, grow bigger etc work.

Rochard 07-03-2007 08:07 PM

How about this - just don't pay them.

Those things aren't run by the city or the police department; They are run by private companies because the local goverment can't afford the $200k system. The police doesn't know about your ticket until you send them a check with the information.

I've gotten a few of these - once during Phoenix forum - never paid anything, and never heard jack shit about them.

here's the one I got during the fourm. You can see I'm wearing a white Lightspeed Shirt.

That light is yellow, no? It's been awhile since driving school, but isn't it if you're in the intersection when it's yellow, it's not illegal?

I was told that these tickets don't count any points or anything against your license anyways, just a way to increase revenue for the municipality.

On Myth Busters they tested the reflective plates and they busted that myth. They could see the plate clearly everytime. I wouldn't trust them. They even tried to out run the camera but couldn't. Even took a picture of a bird running the red light camera.

I actually have a nearly 100% method of keeping the cameras off my plates... I bet it's illegal as shit too. I wonder if I could try selling it :-O

That kind of logic is not allowed. It makes way more sense to spend hundreds of dollars and countless hours beating the system.

in SC, if you can make it through the intersection at your present speed before it turns red, it's legal. However, you cannot accelerate at all to make it, even if you're going well under the speed limit and never exceed it.

In California, if you enter the intersection while the light is yellow you're ok.

As far as the spray goes, they're trying to outlaw them in parts of california. Here's the article

pornguy 07-04-2007 11:48 AM

Simple answer to that, is DRIVE fast enough the camera can not see your plates.
