75' wifi tower at our building (PICS)

So I bought this industrial condo for my company (more pics to follow) and this week we erected a 75' wifi tower to communicate with the 100' tower at my house 10 miles away.

Where I live there are no high speed options so I made my own private link. I had this before but with a small antenna mast on the roof of my old leased space a few blocks away.

After the cement dried they had the tower up in just over an hour.

Sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

No groves of trees between home and work?

stickyfingerz 07-01-2007 09:42 AM

What kind of speeds you getting at home now Brad? Ive seen this done in smaller distances and smaller towers like upto 3 or 4 miles. Thats pretty amazing stuff. Also are you using some sort of wep between the two to keep people off if?

There are trees in between but my home is naturally 400' higher than my office. 802.11b is "near line of sight"

The 100' tower at home gets over the 60' trees I have here.

I had a signal with the office antenna 40' lower last week, now I just have much stronger signal (80%) :)

I have 11 mb to the house and 10mb fibre at the office, I use WEP and mac adress filters to keep the link private. :)

Cool.

When goodgirl lived in the sticks they tried everything, but could not get over the trees . . . but everything is so damn flat there.

That's insane, I should do a scan and see if I pick it up here in Acton :upsidedow

GITZINGER 07-01-2007 09:47 AM

where do you live that you don't have strong service?

Rural Ontario

Thanks Brad,

It works really great. Everyone in Irvine finds it fast.

calibra 07-01-2007 12:05 PM

Seems really easy when you look at the pics. Cool shit!

i was wondering that too

tony286 07-01-2007 12:18 PM

Very nice,I think we will see more and more of that.

d-null 07-01-2007 12:55 PM

did you have to get a special license and approval to broadcast that distance of a signal?

fris 07-01-2007 12:57 PM

did ya have to get a permit? i know some locations require you can only have it so high

Brad Gosse 07-01-2007 01:30 PM

No license is required for public wifi freqs (it's kinda like CB). The distance is not an issue for interference since it's a narrow beam point to point and not broadcast.

Air traffic permits are not required for towers under 120' and my town has no tower restrictions in my zone. One of the zoned uses of my unit can be a broadcast facility. I am in an industrial park so zoning laws are pretty wide open.

KILL_FRENZY 07-01-2007 01:56 PM

that's quick :) now all you have to do it's to enjoy the high speed :winkwink:

aico 07-01-2007 01:57 PM

you should have gotten one of those that look like a palm tree.

I wouldn't count on WEP and MAC Filters to keep things private. WEP is simple to crack and MAC spoofing has been around forever. Might want to look at WPA and Radius servers if you have anything on your network that you wouldn't want on the wrong hands, like Quickbook info or anything like that.

MMR Blaze 07-01-2007 04:09 PM

...you said erected...he he he....

Sosa 07-01-2007 04:51 PM

thats awesome :)

Chester D. 07-01-2007 05:02 PM

lets see the one at your house.....doesnt it make your place look ugly as fuck?

Kard63 07-01-2007 05:03 PM

Thats pretty damn hardcore. How much does a tower cost? Is the latency still good enough to game?

collegeboobies 07-01-2007 05:06 PM

So whats the cost of a tower like that? What other technical things do you need or does that plug into your wireless router? lol

WiredGuy 07-01-2007 05:11 PM

Thanks for the free internet Brad! hehe

NO, I have seen it, it does not ruin the look of the place. Congrats on the new place Brad:thumbsup

Daymare 07-01-2007 06:56 PM

Brad, look up WEP cracking on google. Wep is absolute junk and MAC address spoofing is easily done on your macs with the use of Kizmac. Look that up too and you won't want WEP, I guarantee it.

teg0 07-01-2007 09:40 PM

Thats awesome. I helped a friend set up a link like that back in Iowa a couple years ago. It ended up working out really well. Just got ot make sure its encrypted. You never know who might be capturing packets in the the area passively along the way.

gandalfuy 07-02-2007 10:59 AM

looks great :)

Cassie 07-02-2007 11:19 AM

wow that is pretty amazing.

xNetworx 07-02-2007 11:34 AM

Thats cool!

Redmanthatcould 07-02-2007 11:37 AM

Now that is some incredible ingenuity!

You can't control the rain, but you can decide to bring an umbrella :thumbsup

tranza 07-02-2007 11:43 AM

Looks pretty cool man!!

RawAlex 07-02-2007 11:54 AM

What is it going to be like when it snows? What is the loss factor on that?

Violetta 07-02-2007 11:54 AM

lol... pimp! :)

Chris 07-02-2007 11:58 AM

that is the sickest thing i have ever seen

pornguy 07-02-2007 12:04 PM

I have a similar set up. But I can get damn near unlimited speeds.

What you should do, is become an ISP and make some extra money from it.

Last year I had 1 night of no svc when we had an ice storm, it works through rain, snow and just about anything else.

The cost of the 75' tower was $4k installed. You would need outdoor wireless bridge equipment from senao or another manufacturer. Not to mention someone willing to climb up and point the dish thankfully my installers did that.

I,d hate to climb up on that thing, specially seeing as how windy it was this past weekend:helpme

Brad, consider these two scenarios:

1) Someone wants free access so they crack your WEP encryption and spoof a MAC address to nick your wifi connection. You may or may not notice, but the end result probably isn't too significant (unless they're a super leech)

2) Someone wants to see your data, so they capture everything and crack your WEP encryption. Once WEP is cracked they can go back to the previously captured packets and view everything unencrypted. Because it's 100% passive the first you may know of this is when they actually do something with the data they've captured. This scenario could be far more damaging to your business and wellbeing in the long run. :2 cents:

WEP is junk, you need something far stronger.

Those scenarios are very possible yes. I know what you don't suggest I do but what do you suggest I do to stop this?

Marshal 07-03-2007 10:39 AM

can we see more pictures?

axelcat 07-03-2007 10:40 AM

very nice

SleazyDream 07-03-2007 10:42 AM

cool idea

smashface 07-03-2007 10:48 AM

I would upgrade the equipment you are using to get a more reliable system. We used Western Multiplex equipment and had really good results.
