Did you know comedian Richard Jeni killed himself?

I was watching ET tongiht while working and they mentioned that comedian Richard Jeni killed himself back in March - I am surprised I didn't hear anything more about this before now. There's not much on the website but at least you can see who I am talking about - he did a bunch of hbo specials. he shot himself... Report: Los Angeles Police found Jeni alive but gravely injured after responding to a call that morning from a woman who said: ?My boyfriend just shot himself in the face.? - he was 49.

commonsense 06-30-2007 01:28 AM

Knew he was dead but didn't remember what happened. His standup routines were hilarious.

Jeni was a talented comedian, but he was also clinically depressed.

I miss his humor - unfortunately he couldn't cope with his demons...

My mother never saw the irony in calling me a son-of-a-bitch.

We're all a little bit hypocritical and we could all help people more than we do. You know you're sitting there watching TV, it's late at night. Then you hear: "For $9 a week, you could help this starving child."

Everyone has the $9, but how do you not give it to them? You gotta rationalize it somehow. You just go, "Ehh that kid doesn't look that hungry to me. Shit he's got a bigger belly than I do. How you can you feed a kid for $9 a week, that's impossible!

Shit a Low-Fat, Low Carb latte is $4.50. Whats that kid gonna do with 2 giant cups of coffee? I'm actually doing him a favor not giving him any money, because there's nothing worse than being wide awake and starving.

Yea, demons suck....but, maybe the girlfriend did it. Kinda weird shooting yourself in the face.

He was a really funny comedian. Got to see him live in Las Vegas a few years ago.

Even the belt couldn't save him!

Many comedians are funny people using the humor to hide serious issues that they hold inside. The lifestyle of many of these standup players is a lonely trek down the road 50 weeks a year to be able to make a decent living, which often means either no family life at all or a family you see once a month for a couple of days between gigs.

Like many performers, they spend their times in bars and nightclubs, which is another temptation of how to bury the issues. It is very tough. Even making it to the top means an endless grind of appearances all over the country, the money is better but the working conditions aren't exactly wonderful.

Comedy ain't pretty.

Yeah, there were a bunch of threads about him on this and other boards that day.
I'm torn between feeling bad that they're gone and hating them for making it so themselves. They made us care about them and then did that. Sucks.

CDSmith 06-30-2007 07:39 AM

I recall seeing several threads about this when it happened.

Suicide sucks.

carol.prime 06-30-2007 08:14 AM

omg!!!..what a weird thing to do...suicide has been a solution to every problem nowadays...killing yourself to escape out of the problem is not an answer...

tony286 06-30-2007 08:20 AM

Its such a shame,he was so talented.

MissMina 06-30-2007 10:18 AM

I just saw The Mask with him in it the other day.

"whats the kid gonna do with coffee anyways?"

baddog 06-30-2007 11:13 AM

Well, since they had announced that he killed himself at the time, I kind of presumed he may have.

I had no reason to think they were making it up.
